Cam chain tensioner and oil leak

opie18
Hope the riding season is off to a great start for ya'll. I was riding lat night and started smelling burning oil and seeing some smoke coming from the front of my bike. This morning I traced the oil leak to the valve that the cam chain locknut and bolt are mounted to. Fresh oil was sitting inside this valve (I don't really know if this is a valve, sorry) in front of a metal disc. I started the bike and this "disc" vibrates and moves with the engine speed and makes a light clicking noise. I've had the bike for four seasons now and have never had oil leaking from this spot. I checked my Clymer manual and the picture on page 99, diagram 50, shows what I am talking about, but it is hard to see if there is a rubber oil seal. Any one have any suggestions? Their are no threads on the valve, so I am assuming a rubber seal may have fallen out. If so, anyone know where I could locate a seal? Thanks! Always appreciate the help this forum provides!

Hey bud, that metal disc you are seeing is actually the tip of part of the cam chain tensioner that slips back and forth in the head there. It's normal to see it moving like that (means it's not froze!),but it's not supposed to be exposed. There is supposed to be a little rubber plug that goes in that hole to keep it from weeping oil. I don't remember the part number, but I ordered one for a guy a couple weeks ago. Still available from Honda. It was about $3, but pretty much any rubber plug would do. There's no oil pressure present there, just residual.

not only is it a cheap part, but it was something I could fix on my own  [ya, I'm not so mechanically minded] when I had the "problem" a coupla summers back.

I just lost the same part last weekend.  its a softplug  Doorman 555-004   Oriellys has it for 49 cents.  if you go to Honda dealer its $6.30 They probably wont have it on the shelf  but  can order it in one day . I used a tiny bit of sealer and tapped it in.  rode all day today and  no leak.
