Compound in lieu of replacing gasket on 78 cb750f

Hey Guys, what are the ramifications if I lift the head and put a bead of gasket compound around the edge instead of replacing the gasket?

I'm not pulling the engine out anytime soon to change the gasket but I have a leak that is messy. At this point I'll settle for a temporary solution if it does affect performance or cause damage.

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!
However let me take a guess at this. Your bike is leaking oil around the fins between the head, and cylinder. This IS NOT the head gasket. It is the rubber "nickels" that go under the cam towers to seal the holes where the head bolts go. The quick simple fix is to get some cotton clothes line rope, cut a piece of it, and jamb it between the fins. It will absorb the oil, and keep things clean. When the rope gets dirty, just replace it.

This is a pretty common thing to do. It is especially common on the left side it seems.
