Detached and re-tached my tank, now having trouble starting bike

bagoony
Hey CB gurus.

I took apart my 750F to learn more about it. I've detached the seat, taillight, battery wires, and tank. I reassembled it because I really wanted to ride the other day. However, it doesn't start up. You can hear the engine trying to wind up, but it starts to click after holding the start button too long and cuts off. Is that unsafe for the starter or the bike in general? I'm not sure if it has something to do with the gas not circulating through the hoses, but I've connected the tank back to the hoses nice and tight w/ the clamp. Kind of lost. Help please.

Continuously cranking the starter for long periods of time can heat up the starter motor, and damage it. Besides, if the engine has not fired in a few 5-10 second bursts on the starter, it probable has a problem. You need to check to see if gas is getting to the carbs. If it is getting to the carbs, is it getting into the combustion chambers. You also need to check for spark at the spark plugs. Once you know if it is getting gas, or spark, you will know what direction to go in getting it running.

Okay, so I found out what was wrong (soo stupid). Correct me if I'm wrong, but my petcock wasn't switched on 'On' or 'Reserve??' At first I had the knob at 'On' then experimented w/ 'Reserve'... after a few cranks the fuel started flowing into the carbs. I was wondering though, what is the difference between 'On' and 'Reserve' when having to start a bike or in general?

As long as it has enough gas to use the "on" position, nothing.

In general? Reserve is to keep you from running out of gass on the road. If the bike starts to studder, switch to reserve and find yourself a gas station.
It's only illegal if you get caught.

If at first you don't succeed, use more lighter fluid

95% of Harley Davidsons ever made are still on the road... The other 5% made it home.
