Drill sizes, for metric taps

Here is a way to figure the drill bit size, for metric taps. Take the bolt size, (such as 8X1.25, 8 is the diameter of the bolt, and 1.25 is the size of the threads) and subtract the thread size from it, and that will be the size drill bit needed. 8mm - 1.25mm = 6.75mm.

I thought the 1.25 was the pitch of the thread?  Like, 1.25 threads per mm. Or something like that...

1.25 is the pitch, threads per MM.

You can also use a tap drill chart.

It would actually be 6.8 mm or .267 thousandths drill. Real world=1/4 inch drill.

I will admit, I have only had math up to "Math 110" in college. But how does 8 - 1.25 = 1/4"?

Real world would be .257"-.266" for a M8x1.25

.267 is within .010 thousandths of being 1/4 inch (.250)

Go look at .010 on a calipers. It is nothing. Just the drill wobble will take care of that.
