This Ole man is going to need better pictures then that to see
OF course you wont to drain ALL gas out,(remove tank check petcock(has filter,Your going to need to give the carbs a good cleaning eventually?? I just blasted mine (bowls off)with carb cleaner real quick (put back on(bowls too, then hooked up a long fuel line as tank set up out the way(your going to need this set-up anyhow)hooked to a spare car batt.(one in bike no good)Going to need so not t ruin good cycle batt.anyhow(?)New Plugs( I used stk.type)there cheap,........................Leave filter/box off N Lil juice spayed in carb,Give her a bump (start) Mine fired right up ,then checked points, and all that is on maintenance list in Manuel.
I'm no mechanic but think the basic are easly done,There's a whole lot more but that was my quick way to see if my bike would start,Witch it did N still, well has it's own Lil prob's now(charging).

Get a Clymers' work shop manual FIRST.

Take the entire motorcycle apart and start by cleaning and painting the frame.

Rebuild the engine because it has ben sitting for 35 years.
Paint ,clean, and corrosion treat all of the parts.

Rebuild the carbs.

Start it and ride it. Forget about that.

Others are / may say there mechanics but don't ride;SO do what is right for your pay check, and if you don't ride ,take all the time to send to somebody else to do the work (powder coat, engine machining, painting,)and you can sit behind a computer and pull info here N there to satisfy yourself that you did it,

Welcome!  Nice starting point you have there! The only piece of advice I will add is to avoid Kreeming your tank unless it is absolutely needed. The tank liners have a pretty bad failure rate everywhere you look. If the tank is rusty it can be cleaned. I have seen several places where people have cleaned the rust out with vinegar, followed by a baking soda/water wash to neutralize the vinegar. The tanks look like brand new inside! Kreem should be a last resort only if your tank has rusted thru and needs holes sealed shut. And it will only seal tiny pinholes at that point.

Either way, enjoy your new bike and all the fun in working on it! See ya around...

. I have cleaned lots of rusted motorcycle tanks and the only one I have that is lined is a fiberglass tank to protect it from ethanol fuels

Before you Kreem that tank, read this...

Re: HI I'm NEW

I didn't read all of the rust removal stuff that Alfa posted Is most likely great,ARE YOU SURE your tank has rust particles in it have you ran gas threw it then onto a screen / filter I use paint filters just to see how / whats in there. My old gas was nasty rust gummy only good to kill weeds . BUT flushed with lacquer thinner and shook N shacked gas in it a few times each time filtering to see what was coming loose ,NOTHING in a solid form all soft ,.YA go shaking salt, rocks, nut n bolts ,your scratching it up causing bare metal spots inside.

Re: HI I'm NEW

Have you shaken and strained some ? Best to get good idea what ya can't see just from top there. Surface settlement is a norm for evaporated gas leaving a residue AND some bone heads stick the gas pump nosel all the way in and scatch were I see from the top view here.(witch I would live with.).

That doesn't look too awful bad. At least it still has some wet look to it. When they are dry for a long time is when they start rusting through. I'd try to vinegar trick if it were mine. Drywall screws, small! nuts.bolts or gravels are good to put inside and swirl around to help knock off the surface rust. If what you can see on top is the worst of it,you'll probably be just fine without needing any tank sealers.

If you are feeling somewhat industrious this seems like a good trick:

That "Tank-snake is BRILLIANT!
Yours sure looks cleanable to me. Spend some time Googleing "Motorcycle Tank Cleaning" there are several tried and true methods... Vinegar like shineyribs mentioned, Evaporust, Electrolosis, I've even read about Food Grade Molasis, I use a toilet bowl cleaner we have locally called "The Works" that removes rust. followed by baking soda and water to neutralize, then rubbing alcohol to dry the moisture. Coat it with some Marvel mystery oil if it is going on the shelf for a while to preserve it...

I would use the Caswell's tank liner instead.
I have used Kreem and the Caswell's liner seemed much better.

The Caswells liner can be applied to lightly rusted surfaces and it is a two part epoxy.
I added white colorant to my Caswell epoxy. I got the colorant in a 2 oz. jar from TAP plastics.
It cost about $6.00 US.

Caswell approved the colorant.
