ok   thank you tools!   btw  my name is eric        as far as jetting i guess i'll just use what i already own or should i up the fuel ? because it does have aftermarket exhaust but a stock air box     previous owner complained the motor popped on top end and would only run 80-90 mph flat out      i asked dad and he said ALL of his would do 130+   single carb bike he said would hit 140 with ease       i want that carb     never thought much about it growing up...thinking about it very much now!!

I have a question about the gas tanks.   Mine is badly rusted thru in a few spots      fixable but not real easily       i got a friend that will sell me a clean but slightly dented tank for $60       i dont know what year or model it came off but it was a 750 tank     my question is, do they interchange on the mounting points of the frame?

Yes, and no. Some will, and some won't. Will need to know what year, and model it came off of.

You will need a tank off any 77-78 bike, or an A model. You could use an earlier model tank, but there would be a gap between the seat, and tank.

Ok   so i got it running, but not very well.    I knew it wasnt "ready" but you know how you get in a hurry to start a new toy       anyways i mentioned elsewhere the carb issues.   I was thinking it would be good to check out all the basics before i proceed to fooling with the carbs much.   My main question now is: can i use my automotive timing light on this bike,if so,how do i connect it?  Positive, negative and clamp on #1 plug wire?  Any advice on tips or tricks welcome!!! Im gonna go study the manual now and take a good look at the points then verify proper timing.  Thanks guys for helping me to get it this far!!!

It never hurts to read the manual several times before doing the work.
As far as your timing light goes, yes, you can use it on your bike.  If it has an inductive pickup (the kind that goes around the spark plug lead), it should work just fine.  If it's a mechanical pickup (where the lead goes on the spark plug and the wire goes onto the lead), that may not work so well. The connection on the spark plug is very small, and not the same as an car spark plug.

Harbor Freight has an inductive timing light in their stores for about $25 US.  You might try "renting" one from Autozone or Advance Auto Parts.  The Harbor Freight unit is a bit dim, so it may be more useful in a garage vs. the driveway. :-)

I agree: better to get the bike kind of running, then verifying timing, before messing with carbs. You might also plan on getting a new set of plugs, as it's possible they will be gas fouled by the time you get everything sorted out. They are also a good indicator of a rich vs. lean running condition.

First set your valves, .003 intake, and .004 exhaust. Then the dwell, 27* on the 4cly scale. Then set the timing. After that adjust, and sync the carbs.

Electronic ignition, COOL I don't know anything about that ignition. You might want to google it. You set the valves cold. Just remove the 8 access plugs from the valve cover. It's awkward to get the feeler gauge in there, but it will go.

ok  i got my laptop in the garage so i can refer to the manual      now it smells like gas and has greasy keys    oh well     i set the valves after finally getting my chewed up covers off    #4 exhaust was at .oo8   and #1 intake was a weeee smidge tight    corrected that and it didnt seem to do much     off idle stumble cleared up a bit  and revving to 4000 may be a touch better   but nothing much really       doesnt seem to labor as bad when trying rev though         if you try to rev it past 4000 you can hear a fluttering of air thru the carbs     im not sure that it isnt loading up cause as soon as you let off it most always will go to about 5000 than sloooowly settle back to idle      still wont idle below 1200-1300       found the timing marks    set the "T" mark inline with line on engine case  on the 1.4  setting  loosened and retightened the cam tensioner per the almighty manual      re-fired the engine and seemed to idle a little smoother and rev a little cleaner but still topping out at around 4000       two questions:  do i need the airbox on while doing this  and WHAT THE HECK DO I DO NOW!!!!    i like learning...hate not knowing   hahaha

Re: Hello New rider here need all the help in the world!!

What syncing the carbs is, is making them each pull the same vacuum. that way each cylinder is operating the same. You will need a set of gauges. I got mine on e-bay really cheap from this guy here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290585212284&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT
It is well worth having the gauges when, you do your own maintenance. It is very easy to sync the carbs. just remove the screws on the side of the carbs, and insert the brass tubes, and connect the gauges to these. Start the engine, and warm it up. Then set all the carbs to match the No#2 carb. You do this by adjusting the nuts on the top of the carbs.
