How to paint my motor black??

edwinmedina28
The whole reason I bought this bike was to work on it myself and put blood, sweat, and tears into it. So far its just been tears lol but I want to paint my motor black for starters. Any suggestions on how to do this myself?? What kind of paint is the best? The best way to do it without taking the whole engine out??

I painted my motor in the frame. It takes a fair amount of masking, but it can be done with (i think) good results. I painted this motor once before when it was out of the frame so it was already pretty clean. I wire brush works good between the fins. Since you dont want to damage the paint on your frame you'll have to stay away from strong solvents for cleaning the motor. Dish washing soap is a pretty good degreaser. It's cheap, bubbles up good and won't hurt your paint on your frame. Pulling the tank off will help you get to things better and is pretty much a must for getting to the valvecover. Pulling the carbs help too,but you might not be up for that. You could mash around them, but in the amount of time it takes to do that you could probably just pop them off since the tank is already off. Pulling carbs is always good fun!

Lots of elbow grease and lots of masking! Good luck and show us your purdy engine when you're done!

I just use Acrylic Enamel myself. The engine does not get hot enough to burn it, if it did, you would need a new engine. Also Aluminum foil works great, for masking around the engine. Just wrap it around things.

aluminum foil is your friend when painting an engine. As a MASK it stays put and can be molded around small parts and fins.

This guy has a pretty good little write up of him painting his engine and sanding his fins. Looks great when he finished it
