I've got a leaker!

I've got a 1980 CB750 Custom.

It's always leaked at the shifter lever or at least it looks like it's coming from the shifter lever. I just did an oil change and now she's pissing like a racehorse.

I'll be looking in my Clymers but I thought I'd ask if anyone's ever seen one leak from there or if there's another common spot where it might be leaking from that's throwing me off the trail?

Well it is possible it is the shifter seal, they can leak. Did you change the type of oil you use as in conventional to synthetic? It may be possible that the leak was over coming the buildup of sludge and a change in oil may have cleaned it out and now it leaks.

Easy thing to do is clean the area well and let it dry.
If it only leaks while the engine is running, start the bike and watch the area closely.

Quick question,

When I opened the FRAM oil filter box there were two rubber rings included one was big and one was (from what I recall) 1" diameter. One was clearly for the filter housing but the other one confused me and I didn't use it.

Do you know where the little one goes? I was starting to think it was for the drain plug :(

My bike left a POOL of blood on the ground from sitting overnight.

Yes, on the bolt for the filter housing, there is a groove close to the head that the small oring sits in.

Ok. I see the drain plug is dry.

I guess the only way to get to that shifter seal will be serious surgery, eh? I noticed in the Clymers manual the front sprocket cover comes off and the seal is behind there, eh?

Man o man.. I do not want to take the engine out just for this leak. :(

I dont know about your shift seal. Mine is easy. I just pull off the shift lever and wiggle it out. I used a screw and screwed it into the seal to get out the old one.
I suppose yours might be harder but you would have to double check in the manual, you have downloaded that right? Download ours here, it is better than the clymers.

Other possible item might be the counter shaft seal for the front sprocket. Lots of crud builds up in there.

Hey cool! That manual IS better. Good thing my Clymers came with my bike or I'd be pissed that I spent the $40 on it.

I had a skim through the pdf and didn't find any diagrams of what I'm looking for.

So I guess I have a couple questions.

1) Can I get to that inner seal if I remove the cover for the front sprocket?

2) If I remove the cover for the front sproket does all the oil piss out? (I just gave it an oil change)

If the oil doesn't piss until I remove that seal.. maybe I'll lean the bike WAY over and try to get that seal out with the oil still in the bike....

I can totally imagine how you got that seal out with a screw. Thanks for the idea! I'm going to try to get to my Honda dealer today to see if they have that seal.

If it's not too much trouble, could you give me a a few steps on how you got to your seal?

Well my bike is different from yours so I can't be too much more help
On mine, to replace the shifter seal, I just have to remove the shift lever. There is a bolt that holds it on.
From there, the seal is right there. Pull it off, oil the shaft and new seal. Carefully slid it in and put the lever back on was about it.

The seal under the sprocket I have not had to replace. BUT you should be able to take the sprocket cover off with no issues.
