Mags to Spokes

mluk1
For a winter project I want to put some 21" spoke wheels on my 77' CB750F. Right now I have the stock mags on there. Originally I was going to find a 77 or 78 CB750K, take the rim hubs off them and lace them to the 21" rim. The only problem is that the rear of a K model is a drum brake, not a disc brake like the F model. Then I thought to use 2 front rim hubs and do it that way, but then I realized there was no place for a sprocket. Is there anyway around this? Are there any of methods of putting on 21's? Are there other models of CBs or honda hubs I should start looking for?

You may be able to use the back hub of a gl1000 goldwing. I think the 70s models used spokes.
Main issue then is just getting your spacing right but I think you can go that way.

I just looked it up, and it doesn't look like it'll work. Although the GL1000 is a spoke wheel with a disc brake on it, it is a shaft drive. So I don't think a chain sprocket will fit. Are there any other bikes that are a chain drive with a spoke rear wheel that supports a disc brake? Someone mentioned to me that I could change me rear brake into a drum. How difficult would that be?

I think I might have given up the idea of running 21" and 21", it'll cost $200+ to just get the spokes made. And the idea of running a disc brake in the back. I'm thinking it'll be easier to run 19" and 19", hoping that there is a Honda model that runs a 19" rear. On Ebay I came across a guy who is selling a rear wheel that he claims is a 19" from a 74 CB650, does that sound right? He doesn't give much of a description on it.

There was no honda 650 in 1974. That didnt come out till 79. and did not have a 19 inch wheel I am pretty sure. Tell you the truth, it looks like a 750 wheel which would be 18 inch.
I have not seen many do 21inch or even 19 inch.
The gl wheel might still work though, depending on what you want but I think it is still a 17 inch rim.

Maybe you can get the seller to actually lay a measure on the rim and snap a pic of it. If it is 19, you could get it and lace up your hub to it maybe.

Hi, just discovered this forum - great!  I believe the 1975/6 CB750F1 ran spoke wheels with a rear disc set up but I think it was an 18" rear, 19" front if thats any help

How could the GL rim hub work? Would I be able to put a regular chain sprocket on it?

How difficult is it to take off the disc brake system and replace it with a drum brake? I think I have more opinions if I do that. If I found a set of wheels from a 77" CB750K I could just run the regular front wheel (which would save me a lot of money) and try and lace the rear rim hub to 19" rim, where could I find a cheap set of spokes to use? There is a place on the internet that can make custom spokes to fit whatever you choose to do, but a a set of 40 spokes cost $100+ USD!

I like the look of two tires/wheels the same size, my end goal is the make my bike look something like this...

Rob,

It looks like you're right, the 1976 CB750F ran spoke wheels! Now to find these hubs...

Well I think you will be looking at some cash here. Spokes are going to be 100 easy. Given the difficulty finding spokes for the 78, I will be spending that soon too.
I too wish there were a cheap place for rims My rear is a bit chewed up from past botched tire changes before I got it.

From some looking, unless you find a used rim, they seem to be $700+.

You might try checking some of the chinese places like www.comstarsh.com
You have to email them but it might be an option.
I'll keep exercising some search-fu and see if I find anything else.

Hey, check out buchananspokes.net!
Rims specially drilled! Yes they are a bit expensive but you can get 21 inch rims which can be drilled for your bike.

Best I have found so far but it would be all new stuff.

I was looking at that buchanan website last night and I roughly calculated the price of running the 21's and it was around $700!

Now I think I have a new plan, find the front wheel of a 77 or 78 750K and running the stock 19. Then find the rear rim hub of a 76 750F (which is compatible with a disc brake) and lacing that up to a used 19 rim. Then just going with big big tires. Just hoping that it'll cost a little less then running 21s.

Well 1 issue with 19 inch rims from most bikes is they were for the front. Now lacing is still an option but the rim is going to be skinnier which means a skinnier tire.
It will be cheaper though.
On cost, till I checked buchanans, a single rim alone at most sites was $700 or more! Now that would hurt.
AND, they would still require work to work.
