Just a 78 k

shultz_1978
Well this maybe a long build as this is my first complete build. All from a picture.

This is what I brought home today.   Don't look the same, But hope I can get the look right. I would like to get or make pipes that look close to those ones to. I have a litttle work ahead of me. As for the wheels I don't know what way to go. The front is a 19"  and the back is a 18" close in size. I just think it would look better with spokes.  Here is one thing that I will have to deal with if I keep this set up. There is like a 3/8 - 1/2 space between the swing arm and frame. I have the 78 swing arm. That maybe what I do just go back to the factory set up. spokes and drum.

Any input as this thing gets off to a start. Thanks

MMMM taste of metal. Yep stripped the rest of the stuff off the frame.Got the rest of the passenger triangles and tabs I don't think I will be using cut and ground off.

I have read on here some were that cutting this section off may lost some of the frame rigity.  Is this true?  I do not need or want it on there. It will be a solo ride.

Ya i have heard cutting back cross brace off weakens frame, especially felt on cornering. I was going to ax it on my bike but then found i can use it to mount my oil tank. I was just going to cut it but weld a new brace in to tie shock mounts together.
No reason a CB 750 cant be your first bike at 15 years old!!

I think I am just going to cut off every thing after the shock. There is a cross member just befor the shock. right. I don't think I will be taking any corners at 80 or 100 mph.

Re: Just a 78 k

Tring to get some ideas for the stance.  I think this is about were I want it to set. The problem is that I have been told the shortest shock I can get is 11". The shock heighth of the shock mount the way I have it is 10"

I know that with out the motor on it the front will set higher. So I will stay with stock forks. When I stretch the front out 2"-3" it should drop about 3/4" to 1" right?

Question: How much ground clearance do you think a bike should have? I don't plan on doing any off road riding.

Thanks for the input.

Ground clearance is wierd on these bikes IMO. My silver bike is all stock with a 4-1 and I bottom it on speed bumps if I'm not being super careful. The chop I havent bottom(pipes out the side vs underneath) but I drag pipes on it constantly with them being so wide and low.  I almost always drag them while coming out of my driveway. So I wouldn't worry about it too much as it seems likes it almost something thats just gonna happen.

It would be pretty cool if you could window your neck somehow, like the inspiration bike has.

The 1978 swing arm was the longest of all from 1969 up to 1978.
I would use that swing arm. It was stronger too.

Just use the shorty shocks from Cycle-x. That will lower the bike bike the right amount.

Put a leaf spring on it. You can get shorter shocks, but you will have to look for them. I found a set of 10" at a swap meet last year. You might need to modify your mounts though to mount another type of shock since the CB 750 uses it's own type bottom mount. Also cut that brace off. Thousands have already been cut off. Unless you are racing at speeds of 150MPH, or more, you will never miss it.

Hoosier Daddy
This is the second cb750 I have seen lately with Suzuki GS wheels. I had no idea it was a "common" swap.
If you decide to e-bay them off to fund the build, that is how you should list them. If you decide to sell them, let me know the width of that 18" rear with disc brake, I' might snag it up for my Zook.

I think I need to get the motor setting on the frame and start mocking up the exhaust and then look at my ground clearance.

I will try to get the window in it. I think that is one of the things I like about the bike.

It is a gravel crew creation from Japan. They do mostlt Yamabuilds Kool looking bikes.

Hoosier I don't think I will be using the Suzuki wheels. It come with Suzuki wheels forks and swing arm. I do like the swing arm as it is like 2-1/2" to 3" longer then the stock swing arm and the Honda wheel slides right on.

The only problem is I will have to make some shims to full a 1/4" to 3/8" gap between the swing arm and frame. After I get the drive chain set up to make sure it is in the right place.

If you want I will let you know what esle a will not be using and check the size on the back wheel.

I cut that brace out on my bike and didn't miss it for a long time. After I learned to ride a little better ( read: harder) I started to feel funky wiggles from the rear end. After checking a bunch of different stuff on the bike I added a small bolt-in brace back on the bike. Wiggles gone! Normal riding, you'll never know it.

BUT! Decide for yourself. Cut the brace out and grab the frame rails with one hand. You can flex them just by trying to pinch then together with one hand. Not very solid IMO,yet I also didn't miss it for a long time. Tough call really

Playing around with some old header pipes and rusted out muflers the last few days. I don't know if they will fit the bill, But they will do well for mock-up of what I am looking for.

They were just laying there. way not Next is doing the tips

Hoosier it looks like I am not using the Suzuki parts. Let my know if you would like any of them. JUst some info.
The rear wheel will bolt up to the factory 78 swing arm, But is not centered. It will need proper spacers made to work. The swing arm will fit and is like 2-3"s longer. It to will need sims made as it is like 3/8 - 1/2" two narrow.

Let me know as I will be listing them on here then e-bay.

Thanks
