Looking for gas tank knee pads.

 I am looking to make a set of knee pads for my tank. I need a piece of rubber that I can cut to shape,and maybe, hopefully be able to put designs in. I figured if it was a hard enough piece of rubber I could use a high speed router to cut edges or designs in it.

 Anyone on here deal with anything like this in their day job?

It's the last piece to my puzzle,then my bike will finally be FINISHED! Thanks

But this step I'd go to Lowe's and get 1 othere shop floor mats the puzzle 1sare  harder then the rest ,If they don't have in stock they should have A sample key chain of colors and will be the same thickness N textue .

Go to an auto parts store. I forget the part numbers but there are two different body mounting pucks that are listed in the motor mount books. They are basically a 1 1/4 inch thick hard rubber (like a motor mount) puck and I think one was around 2 1/2 inch diameter and the other was around 3 1/2 inch. They can easily be carved or even routed. Less than $10 a pair brand new. Oil and grease resistant too. :) I know they were in the Anchor/Doan catalog, but the online catalog only lets me look by application, they don't have a pdf catalog where i could find the picture first. I can look it up tomorrow at our local parts store if you think that would work.

would a wood-burner work for doing the designs? would give you a lot more control and could do more intricate designs

Shiny, I am a percussionist and once made a practice pad (something to hit with sticks ) with some 1/4" rubber I purchased from an industrial supply company. I think they had it on a roll about 3 feet wide. I only purchased like 10" and it was dirt cheap -nice stuff too, not the kind of thing that would turn your jeans black.

Just mask them off where, you want them, and spray bed liner on.

Thanks Mark,but I need something a little bigger.Probably at least 8" by 12" per side to get the entire area covered.Those bushings in your link are for the front tank mounts.Also too small but I do appreciate you looking!

Hellbilly,he wood burning tool is something my Pops and I discussed.I think it would work as long as you wouldn't overheat it and make it start cracking. But the intricate designs you mentioned is definitely apart of what I want. Which throws the spray on bedliner idea out for this particular project.Sorry ToolsBut only sorta...I could make what I want out of aluminum and then coat it with rubber.I could cut,grind,knurl alot of design into a piece of metal...hmm,just might work.

I think we're on the same page Half-Caf. I need to find something like that around here. There is a company in town called Motion Industires that deals with alot of conveyer belt systems and such.I think I'll shop there.

There a ton of really affordable knee pads on ebay,but none that look like they would work on my tank.Too bad someone doesn't make need pads for a GS. That would just make my life way too simple.

Find yourself a tire regrooving tool. You could make some cool patterns with one of them. Hey. How about using a piece of old racing slick?

Ooh, I kinda like that idea, too. It's fun to incorporate things that have some sort of meaning to them.
For example, as I'm pretty big into cycling, my work belt is made out of an old slick mountain bike tire. It's also fun to tell people how you made something that once served one purpose into something else.

And Shiny, isn't it nice to throw an idea out there and get  4 or 5 decent opinions on it?
