Modern car oil filters

Lucky 1
Modern car oil filters are switching to non spin on filters again just like back in 1969.

I guess the manufacturers want to save the steel and make it easier to recycle the oil filters.
My wife's 1996 Toyota was spin on and the 2009 Toyota is paper filter in reuseable canister on the engine block like the CB750.

Our 2006 Toyota is still spin on.

I love the old cartridge setup. Less waste that way. The mess is pretty much.the same as spin ons, but its less going into the landfills. That should allow for lower filter prices, but we both know that's not gonna happen.

As long as they don't do it like Volkswagon. My friend had a Passat and it is inside the oil pan, so everytime you get an oil change, you have to pay for an oil pan gasket and all the labor to remove and reinstall it, PLUS the labor to remove all the underbody pans that are in the way. Her oil change and tune up ran about $800 (80k mile service, so there was a lot more involved than just the oil)

Yes ...that would be very stupid.
Great for the oil change business. Another chance  to strip more bolts on your expensive car.

Just as bad as fuel pumps inside of gas tanks.

Remember the 747 that blew up and killed all aboard when the fuel pump wires
got old chaffed and arc'd.

Dumb..dumb...dumb.

Please people do not buy cars or motorcycles that have these features.

Many new sport bikes have the fuel pump buried under the intake manifold.
The Honda Magnas and VFR's at least had it on the side where it was easy to get too.

They claim to put the fuel pumps in the tank to keep them cool. Yeah, how about designing them better with something better than the cheapest taiwanese components in the pump that will last 25k miles? How about make the pump better and more efficient so it runs cooler, WITHOUT having to be in the tank to use the fuel to cool it? Really, what cost would that one change add to the manufacturers bottom line, when you know they could pump up the price of the car $200 to cover it and no one would even notice. I had a Holley inline external pump on my hot rod and it lasted well over 100k miles, OUTSIDE the tank. (it was one of their good ones, the 12-150 150GPH billet base geroter pump, not the entry level junk)

Those Holley pumps are notoriously tough. I have an old Holley Blue that I used to empty heating oil tanks when we had jobs where people were converting from oil to gas. I've pumped pure filth and sludge with that baby. Tough, tough, tough.

That deal on the VW you mentioned is just ridiculous.Wow.

Many motorcycles with fuel pumps do not even need them.
There were carburated motorcycles with fuel pumps that could easily use gravity flow.

For instance : The Honda VF and VFR series.
