My first Cafe Build RE-DEUX!

stillbuster
Well I cut my losses on the 81 CB750 and sold it.
I found this 1979 CB750K on Craigslist.
I ended up getting it for about $.83 cents a cc!
It runs like a sewing machine, is in garage kept condition, there is not a dent on the thing with the exception of the tank, which really does not matter as I plan to put knee cuts in the tank before it is over, the rear shocks are completley dead.

Part out:
I am going to remove all of the rolling couch accessories and list them in the classifieds so if you see anything that sparks our interest let me know.

"Rolling Couch" had to add that in there, a throwback to my Crotch Rocket days!

Yeah my wife and buddy are adamant that the chrome strippers stay on the bike somewhere!

Does anyone know of a compatibility year "range" for exhaust systems for this bike?
It seems the 79 CB750k is a one year deal? Hoping I am wrong. I would like to find a used 4 into 1 exhaust for it.

If I can't find a used set does anyone have a link on modifying the current pipes INTO a 4-1?

The 79 was the only year to have the Boat Tail. As, for the exhaust, I would just get a new MAC. Cycle X, and vintagecb750.com both have good deals on them. However any CB 750 exhaust both SOHC, and DOHC will work. That is about the only thing that will cross over.

Re: My first Cafe Build RE-DEUX!

When I picked it up it ran a little rough from sitting for a while. I drained the tank, put in a quarter tank of non-ethanol fuel and half a bottle of sea foam, let it idle for a while then ran it down the road for 4-5 miles now it runs great.

A question on the rear shocks:
The ones on the bike are completely dead.
Should I go back with "stock" shocks or is there another option under $200???
And since I am wanting to cafe do I want to lower the rear end?
I have looked around at some of these shock sets!!! Big $$$!

Check vintagecb750.com for shocks. They have a set of progressively sprung shock, for around $75.00. I have them on the Toolmatic, and really like them.

I'm almost afraid to post this for fear of Tools smacking me. But here goes. I thought my shocks were bad and puking oil, turns out it was coming from somewhere else. Tools musta felt sorry for me and sent me a gorgeous set of shocks for my bike. Thank you sir...sorry pal I still have my old ones if youd like them. You know, pay it forward. Someone did it for me. I dont know what shipping would cost, but they are yours for the asking. They are not primo, but not too bad looking either. It is this style shock. If interested i will send you a good pic of their actual physical condition so you can decide if you want them or not.Whatever you want to do,just let me know.

Not so much a rollin couch now.

I am thinking of how I can incorporate the "boat tail" into my seat cowl cafe style.
Anyone have a pic where someone has used the boat tail.

This post was updated on .
I would like to give a big shout out to shinyribs!
Thanks for being a standup guy!

I have the bike stripped down and cleaned about 30 years of chain lube, dirt and oil scum off of it.
I removed the headers as another forum member wanted them then decided against it, so I bit the bullet and ordered this system:

http://www.powersportsuperstore.com/Mac-4-Into-1-Canister-System-Black-201-2601-p/4156378.htm

I also ordered these WIDE clubmans as I have seen some pictures where others were having clearance issues with the forks with standard clubmans.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/120849007491?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

The clubmans came in today and look great. I was going to get them put on today, but "life" came into play and other plans were made.

Thanks for all the help, this forum is definitely a good place with some great people.
I will update with pics when I can.
I am still looking for a headlight and bucket/ears if anyone has one.

I will also be adding the 2-1 headers to my for sale list in the classifieds if anyone is looking for some.

Has anyone here used products from these guys?

I am thinking of using one of their integrated taillights and using the fairing I have, shortening it and the frame then tucking one of these lights underneath.

I like the fact that you are going with the blackI have seen the black exhaust systems for sale, but never one on a bike. Im anxious to see it on your bike! I guess I got lucky on my clubmans,I never considered the fact of wide forks.
I've never heard of that site myself, but I really like the look of those integrated lights! Very cool! I dig it!

Re: My first Cafe Build RE-DEUX!

I mounted my clubmans (loosely).

I have some questions:

1. Do I need to buy shorter control cables or can these be shortened?
If so a link to show me how would be cool (youtube)?

2. All of this wiring hanging around, what do I do about that? cut/solder/heatshrink each connection?

3. There is absolutely no room to lower the forks, I have about 1/16" clearance between bars and fork ends, will I have to find a DIFFERENT fork tree to lower the forks? if so which one?

The clubmans are supposed to curve down, not forward. That might allow, you to lower the trees on the fork tubes. As, for wiring, cut it, hide it, or anything, you can think of to clean it up.

Your bike is a DOHC vs. my SOHC,but the cables should be very similar. They will all work out stock length, but you have to move some stuff around.Like how you route them. We were discussing this earlier with another fellow. I'll see if I can find that post.

It looks like he has his bars on right, they are just not clamped in and have swung down, looks like.

If your bars are like main, then yes, they will not allow the forks to slide in the tubes at all. I wouldn't think of lowering my bike,my exhaust drags as it is,but to each their own!

Thanks.
The clubmans are in the only position they will work. The "points" can come up some but thus will rotate my controls pointing almost straight down.
They are already at a downward angle.
