New Project CB750 ?

Alanbarearse

Above was just purchased in the UK, it has 8000miles on the clock and on first look it seems in great condition for an 32 year old bike.
I have now got it home to the Canary Islands and have just started on a major strip down. It runs fine except for a sticking carb needle valve which has now been sorted along with a major carb overhaul.
i understand from David Silver in the UK that this bike was a US import?? Black engine! FC model?
It has some odd marks on the engine and I am wondering if there is a special spray paint that can be acquired so when the main engine is in bits i can spray it. Before you say take it to an engine guy we just don't have that sort of thing over here. Not even mains water and telephone but we get by.
Any help would be appreciated

I would never tell anyone to take their bike to an "engine guy". I encourage everyone to work on their own bikes, so I say "Go For It". As for engine paint, I use Rust-O-lium acrylic enamel paint on all my engines. It's good to around 500*, and if your engine gets that hot, you need a new engine.

VHT (very high temp) paint is best for engines. Any paint as long as it can handle the heat should work.

What looks cool is to paint the engine black except for the very edge of the fins. Those stay silver. Looks pretty good.

It looks to me that you two guys are the main men on this site with lots of knowledge regards the bikes. When I put in the post that I am not sure what the model would be is there anyway to clarify this? David Silver has in UK has suggested that it's a FC model, do you think its correct?
Just trying to nail down what it is exactly.
Thanks for the tips about paint etc, will have to wait until my next trip to UK.

I have never heard of an "FC" model in the states. Here we just have the K,C, and F. The VIN tag on the frame should have the model on it.

I have checked the label and yes it just states F model. Strangely enough parts specialist David Silver in Uk do have it down as a FC model?
I don't supposes it makes any difference but would have been good to clarify.
Thanks for the info about the heat paint, I have just been to what you would call a car spares place, you know the ones that sell everything from Oil to polish etc etc and when I asked if they had any black heat resistant paint I got a Homer Simpson look of idiocy. Great place to live though.

The paint will be listed as engine paint, you should be able to find it at your version of wallmart ot lowes (sorry, been awhile since I've been across the pond, not sure what stores you got). I've heard of people also using grill paint, but I'm not sure how hot it can get to.
It's only illegal if you get caught.

If at first you don't succeed, use more lighter fluid

Thanks Truck, the only problem is we don't have anything remotely like a Wallmart etc. we got IKEA last year and closed the island for a day when they opened, now a national holiday each year IKEA Day!!
I shall soon head back to the Uk far a weekend and will have a list of stuff to take back.

I have the cam cover off at the moment and it's looking crappy, it looks like it was sprayed with some sort of lacquer and it's now lacking in places, do any of you experts know of an easy way to get the shit off leaving it ready for polishing?

Man, the best way is with a media blaster such as a sand blaster. Most people use beads or shells instead of sand as the sand can be hard on parts.

Anything else is hard to get into the fins and other tight places.

It's likely the factory clear coat on the cover is peeling.Mine is too. I've been way too lazy to do anything about it yet. I'll sand blast mine when the times comes, but I wonder if paint stripper will work? I'm sure it will remove the flaking paint, but I wonder if it might stain the aluminum as well.

You should use a bead, or soda blaster. Sand is way too course. However anothe3r way to strip it is to use Easy Off over cleaner. It will take it to bare aluminum.
