Sounds like the new battery just had enough juice for a couple of starts. They usually don't come fully charged of the shelf. It'll need to be charged up for 8 hours or so when you get your charger.

Confirmed the rotor and stator are fine. Got a really weird reading on the battery though . . . 26v?!

Got a similar result from the old battery. It seems as though the juice is not making it to the starter like it should. Am I crazy in thinking this?

26 volts?!?! Can you verify that your meter is ok?Test it on a known good source,i would say,and go from there.Have you popped the starter cover off and checked the connections in there?Or maybe ohm out the starter cable and see if it is ok.

Sure it isn't milivolts? As in point 26.

Not entirely sure what I was doing wrong while testing the voltage, here's a pic of my actually testing it:
To be honest though, it doesn't really matter. I went out and got myself a proper volt meter and charger. The battery was giving 12.8v, but was at 30% charge. I set up the charger until it was at 80% and was able to start it. I then confirmed that the charging system on the bike was feeding charge back to the battery while the engine was running too!
Proof:

This it the Bike from Superior?
Nice looking bike. How much did you get it for?
I also replaced my battery & got a charger for my 81. Advance Auto set me up nicely with a sealed battery & a 1 amp charger that comes with a pigtail for the bike.
I also picked up a tested at Walmart.com
Works great. Excellent way to test the battery & charging system on the fly for under $20

This is indeed the bike from Superior, nice to see a local . Whereabouts are you located?
They posted on Craigslist for $1000 (they actually had a sticker on the bike in the shop for $1200), but I ended up getting it for $650 (after some awesome negotiation assistance from a cousin).
That is a sweet setup to check the charging system/battery while riding. Did you set up a 12V cigarette charger, or directly hook into the electrical system?
I'm looking to do something similar, with the additional step of having a means to charge my cell phone while riding (that way I can gps track my rides, and other such fun/silly things).

Shiny, how did you get your engine so clean?
I'm assuming lots of elbow grease is a given, but what else?

Your meter should have been set on the 20. glad, you got it going.

Not sure by looking at your picture, but is that an A/C voltage only meter?I didnt see a setting for D/C voltage. That could be it!
I cleaned my engine per Tools advice:Easy-off oven cleaner and a pressure washer. I also used a wire wheel on a drill(i didnt come from the factory with elbow grease...i like pnuematic power) and a few cans of spray paint.Nothing cleaner than new paint!!

I looked again at your meter.Im pretty sure it is not a dc meter. The wavy line above the "V" denotes alternating current. You need one with a straight line running parallel to a dotted line. That is the symbol for direct current.

Yeah, I checked on it, and you're right. I ended up getting a AC tester (analog), and all looks as it should

Nice job on the price. That bike looked like it wouldn't take much to ride. It was way too nice to be used as a parts bike so I passed on it. I'm down in Southern Chesapeake.
That little Walmart unit works like a dream, especially while riding to check the charge output. They didn't have it in the stores but it arrived in 2 days (ship to store).
I added a waterproof marine cigarette lighter to the bike. Basically it is attached to the cluster with industrial double face tape & a 10 amp in line fuse direct to the battery. The only downside is it is always live. I will eventually rewire the feed from a power source that is on only when the key is on when I expand it to a 3 plug unit with built in USB plugs.
This is just the socket assembly.

Nice pics, I really dig the look that the windshield has.
Are those forward controls available by chance (assuming they'd fit a C)?
