No charge to the battery

rij1
I'm having a problem finding the problem to why my battery wont charge in my bike. The bike idles and runs but the battery wont charge. If I charge the battery in the bike with a battery charger and start the bike and ride to work few times the bike wont start cause a dead battery. I had to push start it to get it running a few times. If I have a volt meter on the battery and the bike running there is no charge.

Hey, repairing charging problems is just part of the fun of owning a DOHC Honda. If you just use the search feature at the top right corner of the home page here, you will bring up a few hundred posts on trouble shooting, and repairing the DOHC charging system. However I will bet dollars to doughnuts that the rotor is bad.

yeah, I think it is. it looks worn out but the guy I bought it from said it was new, the stator looks to have a small worn spot also. Gonna have to replace.

Having been through the exact same thing, my money is on the regulator rectifier.

I'll have to test that also. I forgot to mention that I only get 10.5v out of one of the wires off the stator while the bike is running.

Check the resistance across the rings on the rotor. It should be between 4-6 ohms. Vibration wears the insulation off the windings and shorts them out. A nasty side effect is that they usually take the regulator out when they go.

It was the regulator rectifier. Whats weird is that part was new. I didn't expect it. How would the reg/rec go bad with under a couple hundred miles on it..

Could have been a crappy aftermarket part. I swapped my oem rect/reg for a buddies aftermarket one while I was tracking down my charging issues, and his practically new one didn't work nearly as well.
