Bike was pretty rough but almost complete, had the wrong tank decals, exhaust and rear fender, frame was very rusty, engine paint peeling and alloy corroded

Thanks chap yeh the bike looks the dogs in blue, was one of the colour options on the 84 FD model but 99% of them seemed to be the red, colour code and mix took some tracking down but recon the blue looks really good with the gold wheels :-)

Looks awesome.  Did you paint the engine?

Any details on how you did it all?  I'm in the process of restoring my 81 CB750K (first part of my restoration is to get it running really well).  I find your bike inspiring.

Are the pipes new, or did you get them chromed?

Re: Restored CB750FD

Hi Thanks for the comments on the bike, was a real joy doing it, was my first restoration and wqanted it to be as close to factory fresh as I could get.
Engine was painted by me, after getting the lump out of the frame I duck taped the carb and exhaust ports and masked up all the oil pipes, wires and bolt heads.
Then it was time for lots of Nitromorse paint stripper to remove all the peeling corroded paint, this took a few applications but did the job really well, be carefull of the rocker gasket as the paint stripper will distroy it, I was going to replace anyway so left it in place.
Next was a major jet washing to remove all the paint stripper and lift the remaining paint, once this was done I used a wire attachment on my drill to flat the corroded ally behind the engine.
Painting was done using high temp alloy engine paint, I masked up the engine covers and applied thin coats each time, building up the thickness.
The results were pretty good. Finished of doing the same to the rocker cover and the oil filter housing.
Then removed the casings and polished them on a bench grinder fitted with sizal mops of varying courseness until all corrosion was gone and the surface was a mirror finish.
The exhausts were from Marving, they are a very nice replica exhaust, did try a Jama one first but thast was a pile of crap, didn't fit, looked awefull and the finish was dreadfull. The marving wen't on first time, but need to get a set of rear mounting brackets that needed opening up on the bolt holes. The standard heat sheild went on as well no probs.

Re: Restored CB750FD

Thanks for the links.  I read through what you did for both bikes.  My plan isn't to go as close to stock as you did, but your bikes have many fewer km's than mine (87,000 kms).  Mine is also my daily rider and I'm guessing that your primary bike is your new one.

I'm slowly working through it.  How long did you take to complete yours?
