I ran across that when the cam died in my chopper. My '72 and my '76 model bikes are like your bottom pic. The '78 model engine I have has the extra holes. All they do is keep the rocker shaft from rotating in the cam towers. I don't know why or when they changed it. Maybe they discovered the shafts were rotating in the towers and causing the towers to wear? Thats my guess at least.

My two early motors also don't have the thrust washer on the end of the crank like the 78 does. Even though the cams are drilled for it Strange stuff...

Shiny, my 78K has oiling holes (thats what I would think they are in there for) on both sides and my SS ony has one side drilled. Im guessing they just missed them.  I know the center holes are there for bolts to hold rocker shafts. but im wondering about the two holes on either side of shaft bolt.

Oiling holes? If there only seems to be one oiling hole the other must be plugged. Theres one hole her pair of cam lobes. Two on each tower. There couldn't be just one. Unless I'm way off on understanding you. And thats highly likely

LOL. If I can figure out Windows Paint anyone can!  Yeah, those are where the bolts go that keep the rocker shafts from rotating inside the cam tower. No oil comes out of there.

Someone has mismatched then in the past I suppose. I wouldn't worry about it though. I don't know what the reason for the change in design was,but the early bikes don't seem to miss it.

Shiny, now I see what you were talking about on those holes. i pulled apart my 75 motor and saw that these earlier motors have 2 bolts keeping rocker arm shafts from turning, along with one bolt holding shafts in. Late model engines only have one bolt holding shaft in. Thanks
