THIS BIKE IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!

jcolz
...seriously.

Ok so i bought an 81 cb750 from a guy in new hampshire in june. Ive been working on it ever since, and the carbs are giving me the worst problem ever....at least I think.

I got the carbs cleaned TWICE. The first time the guy who cleaned them said they were very gummed up and cleaned them thouroughly. Then we put them back on and the bike still was running like shit. Low power. After that we took em off one more time and i cleaned another tank I had and put that one on and after that still LOW POWER.

Then multiple float bowls started leaking gas out of the bottom nipple. I just took the carbs off tonight and put them back together. Still one is leaking again and there is LOW POWER.

There are bursts here and there of full power but its very inconsistent.

Note also that I put all new spark plugs in this thing too.

There are times where it will be running pretty well, but low and behold it will start running like shit again.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks

What kind of air filter are you using?
Were the carbs only cleaned? Where the idle jets pulled out and cleaned ar at least manually cleaned and not just dipped?
See these carbs are hard to clean, your symptoms are classic dirty carb and if the idle jets are not cleaned with a strand of wire, they may not be coming clean. Carb cleaning is almost an art. Spots that look inconsequential suddenly affect things. Your floats are also leaking and that is what is causing the fuel to leak out. You need to pull the floats out and take a qtip and clean the ports with a twisting action.
Also, you should get the manual here and set your float height to the specs. You should also check the diaphragms in the carbs for cracks. It is common if carbs are gummed for the diaphragms to crack.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
