I understand completely. Phantom issues like this can be very hard to diagnose. Certain things be ruled out with some tests.
For instance, oil that is thinner will cause more noise or if the oil is worn out. Also looking in your oil and filter for foreign material can sometimes tell you if a bearing is dying or a ring or some other part.
Actuating the clutch can help pinpoint areas. It is really hard to say sometimes. Maybe pull off your oil pan and look for anything sitting in the pan.
You can also get a mechanics stethoscope that has a long point that you touch to the engine and allows you to hear where noises may be coming from.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
