Timing marks and cam do not line up

flyinpiper
Hello,
I have a custom 71 cb750 chopper, had to pull the head off to replace a seal. Trying to set the cam with the timing marks, according to the manual, the 1.4 is on the "T", and with the key mark at 12 oclock and the line marks on the cam are horizontal, just like what the book shows. All parts are in the original place, including the chain sprocket. Spent hours trying to get them perfectly lined up, but they are off a couple degrees, not seeing a way to adjust it so they do line up after you put the 2 sprocket bolts in. Am I missing something?
Thanks so much for your time and consideration...

That is exactly what mine looks like. Unfortunatly, I do not have another cam. WIll I be able to make this work? It must have been like this before I tore it apart, chain does not appear to have wear. If I was to use it, would it be better to use it like pic position 2 or 3?
Thanks again for your response and kindness...

Oops, just saw the line that said it should be in the 11:30 position when in time. I will give that a try.

Thanks again!

Seems Honda must have had some stamping issues on some of it's cam production. Be sure to rotate the engine a few times before installing the rockers to make sure the timing marks keep lining up. These are interference engines, and will bend the valves if the cam timing is off.

Hi Tools,
I figured out what the problem was. I had the sprocket on correctly, it matched the impression where it was originally. But then I just spinned it 180 degrees and it was dead on.
I have a new issue of dialing down the idle, sounds great, but when goosed, the idle stays hi. Looking for vacuum leaks now, been reading posts about what to look for.
I do have one question for anyone though. When looking at the back side of the carbs, around the middle of them are 2 small tubes that come out of the inner 2 carb bodies. One you can blow or suck air through, the other side seems blocked. Not sure the function of these or if they are to be connected to anything, could this be my vacuum issue?
Thanks again for everyones help. I will be posting a pic of my 71 chopper tomorrow.

Funny,  turning the sprocket should not make any difference. The two tubes are the bowl vents. They just hang down.
