Tire problem, won't crank - piss and moan

micallen
I was set to take my first reak ride EVER this morning on the CB750 custom I bought 2 weeks ago.  I stopped at the convienence store to put air in the front tire because it was a little low.  Before I did that, I tried to check the pressure in the rear tire.  I couldn't quite get the gague on it so I leaned the stem over a little and it POPPED OUT !!  I eventually worked it back in enough to ride it home, but I know it won't stay.  I need a new back tire anyway, so I'll get a new stem put in then.

SO, since I can't ride it now, I changed the oil.  Whe done, I tried to crank it to run the oil through, and NOW it WON'T CRANK !!  After about 6 attempts the NEW battery is dead.

I want to blow it up.  What the hell?  Why won't it crank?  Or is it random dumb luck???

Any advice appreciated.

My brief experience with my 79 cb750L is that it takes a lot of juice to turn these over, and it also takes relatively high RPMs to charge them up. So if you've been starting it a lot lately, and haven't had it out on the road, you're just draining the battery.

How much oil did you put in? Also, 2 comon things people forget. Make sure your gas is turned on and the kill switch is on! You would be surprised how many people do that.

Charge your battery. It is a common problem with battery not holding a charge if you haven't gone out on a ride. It happened to me last weekend:)

3.7 quarts.  Yes, I had it turned to run.  Gas on?  Am I supposed to turn that off?  I've only had the bike 2 weeks, so I haven't given it another thought.  Am I supposed to turn the gas off like every day?

It will start instantly when I jump it.  If I rev the engine for a while, and turn it off, it will not crank back up.  It has to be jumped every time.  Again, this is a new battery.

You need to take it out for a good long ride to charge the battery.

Better to turn the petcock off every time you shut it down [and to turn it back on when you want to restart  ]

The sohc 750 will not charge much below 2000 rpms. You gotta keep it above that for a while to charge. If you still do not stay charged then it is time to check the adjustment on the regulator and check the wiring, Pay special attention to the connectors. They can look good but make poor connection.
