My buddy that has the CB 750 that I put duel disc breaks on, came by yesterday, and asked if I wanted to ride along with him to a motorcycle salvage yard. I thought great, I could pick up some carbs, for the KZ 750. When we walked in I asked about carbs. The guy said "yea I have those $175.00" I was really surprised. He said to look on the shelf in the back room. My buddy quickly went back, and pointed out a shelf stacked with all kinds of carbs, parts to carbs, and assorted break parts. Nothing was labeled. I told my buddy at $175.00 they could keep their carbs. He then wanted to walk around. There were bikes shoved together in some places, and thrown about in others. All most all of them had missing spark plugs, and were being use as water containers. Once good gas tanks were laying in the mud. I saw the remnants of several CB 450 Black Bombers, and 305 Dreams laying about. Even a 305 Super Hawk. There were also several Kawasaki H-1 strewn about. Piles of exhausts, and wheels. Again nothing marked. I found a CB 750 with a very nice chrome front wheel. I asked about it. $100.00 was the answer. I was thinking maybe $50.00. Any way my buddy spotted an oil cooler, and got the idea of putting one on his bike. We found one on a CB 900 that was all there. After some work we got it off the bike. The oil filter bolt was all buggered up, and took a big pair of vice grips to get off. Anyway we got the oil cooler, and all the related parts off, and took them up to the counter. The guy wanted $75.00, for it. I was thinking $40.00 or $50.00. My buddy went on, and bought it. The place had some neat stuff, but the guy priced me right out. I'll stick with ebay.

I visited a bike salvage yard a couple of years ago, too. It grieved me to see so many bikes, rusting, and rotting, sinking in the mud. There was a veritable gold mine sitting there, but it was all being ruined by the elements.
I did, however, discover that I could have gotten a Vetter fairing, and a trunk, for much less than e-Bay, only because of shipping costs being so high. Each junkyard is different. Some are reasonable in their prices, some are not. I chatted with the folks there about getting my hard plastic trunk re-painted. I had previously asked an auto body shop about it, and I was told it would be $200-$300! The paint guy at the salvage yard quoted me around $100, for the same simple, gloss black, with a clear coat finish... I know where I will go for having my bike professionally painted -- and it won't be to an auto body shop!
You are correct in your price estimate on the CB900's oil cooler. I bought one off of e-Bay for around $30, delivered (radiator only, with hoses; was in great condition, only needed some fresh, gloss black paint to spiff it up). I then modified it to fit my adapter, but the price was very reasonable, and it is still performing flawlessly, three years later. Cheers!

The one I visited is around two hours drive away. Not too far, but not terribly close, either. Like I said, it was a good place to visit. I keep it in the back of my mind in case I need something they might have for less than e-Bay, with shipping factored in.

Rerun, which one did you end up deciding on?

This one. It seems to be a very reliable bike. Close dealer if something happens I can't fix. Was about 2500 cheaper too.

Sweet Gorgeous bike Rerun. Shift red...off to see Sherman Williams So what made you pick the Yamaha over the Aprilla?

Well a few factors. First, parts should be a bit more available. Yammys are a bit weird about that but italian parts are spotty at best.
Insurance for this bike at full coverage is about $2 more than my CB is on liability. I would assume the aprilia would have been even more being an italian "rare" bike.
The yammy seems to get mid 40s to low 50 for average fuel economy. The aprilia would have been 40 at best.
Local deal for yammy. 250 miles for aprilia if I NEEDED the dealer. And the Yammy is supposed to be very durable.
I can pay off the yammy in less than a year versus 2 for the Apr.
Plus, if i remove the fairing, the FZ6 looks really nice. Google FZ6N to see what I mean.
I still lust for the aprilia but maybe in a couple years I will get a 2010 or later model as almost all issues have been worked out very well.
Now, if we can stop having snow storms here, I can actually get a good ride in!

You know,it's interesting what they charge for insurance. I don't understand it at all. I have full coverage on the '66 Impala with it valued at $20k and my insurance on that car is cheaper than the liability on my CB. I mean,it's liability! How much damage could I cause to someone elses vehicle with a bike?!
|
Administrator
|
Well you can cause quite a bit actually but I know what you mean. Insurance has no rhyme or reason.
the FZ has double the hp my cb does and will go way faster and yet my CB has higher insurance by virtue of a larger cc engine.

Depending on the coverage, it's not what your bike will do to the other car, it's what happens to you when the bike hits the other car. Insurance companies believe that motorcycles are dangerous, and people get hurt on them a lot more than when they're in cars.
They charge what they think they can charge without losing customers. It's all in a big table/spreadsheet somewhere.

You're probably right,Luke. I figured it might have to do with the medical part of the liability. even though that still applies to the other vehicle, not you. Who knows...
