Im looking to buy a 1971 cb750 K0 and noticed while researching the bike online that there are other models with K1, K2, etc rather than the K0 that Im looking at, can anyone tell me what the K stands for and the difference between the numbers??
thanks!

The number behind the K denotes the year of the bike. However, there technically was no such thing as K0. The numbering scheme did not start till 71 with the K1, otherwise there would have been 2 K0 bikes.
The K0 was added mainly to fit with the rest of the line. Now this only applies to the sohc bikes. The dohc seemed to be more random I think.

DOHC's came in simply K, C (custom), and F(Super Sport). Also 900 F and C. Also 1000C & 1100F.
|
|
the numbers refer to the version release of the bike. the numbers follow close to the year the bike was released but not perfectly -- a K2 may still have been available at the start of 1973. I have a reference guide that explains the model differences; they are mostly minor fit and finish type stuff.
|
|
Why would there have been 2 K 0 bikes ? I ask because I have one that would fall into one of those designations ------ if there were 2 K 0's .
|
Administrator
|
There were "K-O" designations for the first year of production on each different model bike. Such as a CB 350 K-0 Manufactured in 1967. The CB 750 was started in 1969, so that year is designated K-0. However a lot of people will argue that the first 7000 that were sandcast were just "K" models.
So what model bike do you have? What is the serial number?

my data plate on the neck of the frame (steering column) , guess you call it frame plate, says manufactured December 1969. serial no.: 1016xxx . without listing my entire VIN no.

That ser# would make it a K-0. What is the engine#? It would be really cool if it still has the original engine.

That would most likely be an early 70 model. My 78K was made in december of 77, but is still a 78 model.
Most likely, yours follows that same pattern. But maybe not. If it IS a 69, it would be a diecast engine, instead of the first line of sandcast engines.

Engine no. is cb 750 e 1016322 . that original? Should this bike have side covers with no vent holes?
also the bike was in Europe at some point early in it's life. There is a USAF parking sticker on the forks for a base in Germany and the speedometer is in Kph. If this is a euro issued bike did they have solid side covers that early??? mine has solid w/ no vent holes.

That is most likely the original engine. The serial numbers were always a few off from the frame. Your bike was most likely sold in Europe originally. However it should have had the vented side covers. They were probably lost years ago. Do you still have the square air box without the fins?

Fins? I believe mine is square. Don't remember any fins on it.

I guess I should describe them as ribs on the sides.

Just to a google for the 69 or 70 and look at the side covers. You'll see the fins.

But that was about the air box. Not the side covers. No fins on side covers right? Just air vents.

What is the significance of square vs ribbed air filter box?

Yes the side covers on your bike should be vented. Also your bike would have had a square, smooth sided air box. The later bikes had a angled cornered airbox with ribbed sides.

I think it was somewhere around the time they started production on the K-1.
