When do you need a new clutch?

My clutch doesn't slip or make noise, but I have to let the handle almost all the way out before it engages.  I adjusted the cable per the manual but it didn't change anything.  Do I need a clutch or is there a way to adjust it other than the cable???

  ..Yes under your clutch cover BUT 1st loosen your cable at clutch housing,2nd,then  loosen lock nut turn adjuster nut in till little drag then 3rd, 1/4 turn back according to Mr.Clymer...by the book..Piute...of course you need play at your lever..
