air cleaner "trumpets"

vingtsous
I'm trying to put back my air cleaner..........

Those F"/$&?%$ tubes that goes from the air box to the carbs..........they dont want to go on the carbs....

I can push them half way on the carbs but they wont go further..........

Questions: are they always such a pain in the ass to work with???

From your experience is it possible that they may have "shrink" through the years??

Are they made from hard plastic or are they usually "souple" or "soft" like rubber????

How do they seal on the airbox??? apparently there's no gasket there....

As usual....thak you all!!

I JUST to put my airbox on yesterday, wish I took pics for you.

If you look at the boots, the first bulge from the top is a fillet, with a slit, then a fillet back to the diameter of the boots. That slit goes into the walls of the output of the airbox, and that is how the boots seal along the box.

Sorry the image is so small! Use 'ctrl' and '+' to zoom in if you can not see it.

Good luck!

I have been attempting the same thing and boy howdy was it not fun.

I am now at the point of having to buying new ones because they were starting to crack anyway. so then I decided to take the air box out to clean which will give me time to research what route I want to go.
the cone type filters seem much easier, but I hear you have to reJet. which means I will pay someone for that.

just want to get it running for a few months. then I can tear into a more in depth cleaning and fixing.

Yes you are right, they do have different carbs. And your trumpets should be soft.

so the "trumpets" are the rubber connection from Carb to air box?

Carb boots, or intake boots.

Wintergreen oil makes old rubber bits like new. Just a splash of the stuff in a pot of boiling water. Boil for about 30 min...OUTSIDE! It will stink your house up real bad if you don't. Yeah,it's a mint smell, but it's very strong. You can get a quart of the stuff off ebay shipped to you for about $20. Which would be a lifetime supply.
