cam chain adjustment

katman
This post was updated on .
Hi everyone,
Can someone take a step by step in telling me how to adjust my cam chain. Here's what I am doing from info I got off this forum but don't no if it's right. I get 1 and 4 piston at tdc and using the 1-4 set of points
I am going past tdc and using the peg with the spring to line up with the timeing mark. This is supposed
to be 15 deg after tdc. I am then loosening the cam chain adjustment bolt and retightening. Is this correct.
I have a 1975 and 77 cb 750's

Need to know year and model.  Also, the OEM service manual is available on this site's home page.  Cheers!

That method works for both models. The later manuals(77/78) had you start the ending and idle it, then loosen the adjuster bolt and let it do its thing and then retighten the bolt.

I do mine by loosening the adjuster nut. Then turning the engine with a wrench, or the kick started until I feel compression. Then I tighten the adjuster nut up.

That sounds alot easier, Should I stop turning the engine over I soon as I feel it tightening up
from compression.
Thanks Guys.

Yes. Just keep pressure on it while tightening the adjuster.

Tools,
I tried you and shinyribs way today. I just kept turning over the engine until I felt like one or two of the cyclinders were going up on compression. It would get pretty stiff so I stopped there and held it.
Hope this is right. Also downloaded the repair manual from this site. It's great. There method is explanied
pretty easy and think I could follow that to. Will both the ways work on my 75 and 77.
Thanks Guys.

I do it on my '78 with the engine running and it works fine.  It only a spring loaded plunger pushing against the cam chain.  The thing about turning the engine against compression is just to replicate the tension in the cam chain when the engine is running.

It will work on all the SOHC engines. I have even done Toolbabes CM185 Twinstar, and some small single cylinder Honda bikes that way. I tried the idling method, but the cam chain made noise afterwards, so I did it the other way, and it was quiet again.

The tenshinor is spring loaded. All the bolt does is to hold the tenshinor from moving once the spring has taken up slack. You do need to tighten the bolt with a wrench! If it was only meant to be finger tight, Honda would have put a thumb screw on it instead of a bolt.

gkmaia, this procedure is for the 69-78 SOHC engines, not your DOHC. I'd refer to the FSM for the correct procedure, but if memory serves, they are adjusted while idling.

I think Seestheday has a write up on it in the help section.
