cam chain tensioner

katman
Hi All,
Hope everyone had a good Christmas. I have started taking my 77k apart to redo like my 75.
I have the engine a on the stand now. Is there anyway to take alook at the cam chain brkt and
tensioner(rollers) without removing the head. I fill one of them is worn and want to fix now. It had
a good rattle when first started, but went away as engine speed increased or when warm up.
I have adjusted it everyway possible. Carbs were synced. Pulled oil pan and it was clean.

The best you can do without removing the head is to look down the tunnel with a flashlight. From what you described of the noise, I would recheck the carb sync, and do a compression test.

Thanks Tools, I'll check it with a flash light. Bike runs great, acceleration, etc. Plugs are nice and tan.
Should I still do a compression check.

You have rollers that are 40 years old and all those little bits of rubber can get in the oil pump screen, the crank oil journals to the main bearings, and the oil restrictors in the cylinder head, and cause major damage.

You need to remove the cylinder head and take
it out and put in a new one.

Also check those two oil restrictors in the back of
the cylinder head and the oil pump screen for
rubber bits.

It's possible the rattle was just clutch rattle. Clutch rattle subdues with heat and rpm. The oil rushes thru the clutch easier and helps to muffle it when it is warm and flowing easily.Cold-they bang around pretty loudly.

Okay, Rollers look okay just hard. Sump and screen were both clean. No shavings are anything.
Chains seem to look allright.  Should I go ahead and replace tensioners.

You mean the tensioner rollers.

Look at them very close. Magnifying glass if necessary.
Do you see any cracks or pieces missing?

I would not worry about them then.
