charging issues with 81

Warble Jones
I have begun to ride my 81 cb750custom, but issues are popping up with it.  I have a 74, but got run off the road into a ditch when I got caught in a rain storm recently down in texas.  Until I can afford to retieve it, I have been riding my 81, but issues are beginning to develop.  The bike is no longer charging, and getting progressively worse to where I could barely keep it running last night in the driveway.  My question then, is are there certain parts that are known to go bad with these bikes?  What can I do to isolate the component that is no longer working?  For reference, when I search the site I use for parts, this part comes up.  http://www.bikebandit.com/1981-honda-cb750-coils-stators/c/a669900?mg=994&t=1  I will be searching locally for what I need, because I need the bike back on the road by the 30th.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Taken in Glacier National Park, northwestern Montana.  My 74, went from michigan to the pacific, down the California coast, then flooded out in eastern Texas.  Through deserts and mountians, cruising and cornering, this 36 year old bike never even started rough.  8,000 miles of perfect operation, perfect riding.

From what I understand, the stator is weak on these bikes. Download the manual here and it will show you how to test the system. I think we have a parts retailer for new stators online, otherwise a boneyard or ebay is a good bet.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

I just checked out the stator and rectifier with a voltmeter, and while the stator is showing higher than normal resistance at 0.5 to 0.6 ohms, the rectifier is completely dead, showing resistance in the thousands and higher both ways.  After reading reviews at bikebandit.com on the available R\R there, I will be ordering the Electrosport one if it is available.  Next check the stator will be replaced due to already replacing the bellows on the side of the carbs this week as well.

thanks for the help
