clutch swaps

Dirty
Anybody know if i would be able to swap the whole clutch basket from my 78 to my 75 motor. The 75 motor is missing all of the clutch parts except for the outer drum and a steel retainer ring. I know the stack is different between the two but i think if I swap drums it would work. Anybody try this???  Or does anybody have some spare parts laying around theyd part with? Thanks, Dirty

There are some differences that cant be worked around. Around '76 Honda started using a larger outer plate. When you look at the slots in the clutch drum you can see where just the last plate is larger. You can use one of the original smaller plates, but it will rattle ALOT.

There's also the double-plate in the middle. It's a Marcel Spring type setup to absorb shock and help reduce rattle. It came out of GL's originally and it was put in the 750 round about the same time.

Also, the clutch cover, not the chrome cover but the cover that houses the throwout bearing, are different between years. Some are a tad taller (stick out further) than others. I'm not sure of the years model differences.

All that to say this,if you swap and early drum into a later engine you may run into an issue with the cover height. And those are the reason why.So just keep an eye out for that. Other than that you should be good. I dont think they ever changed the splines,so it should swap over.
