My computer all of a sudden has stopped showing captcha images. I have not personally made any changes to anything and noone else uses this computer. This is very annoying and can make ordering parts impossible.Help please!
I am running Mozilla Firefox if that matters and it do an automatic update round about the same time this started. I think that is related to the issue, but I am completely clueless as how to fix it.

Try downloading a different browser, and load the same page to see how it performs. As to which other browser to try, there is: Google Chrome (fewer frills, but it's what I use 95%+; Google tracks everything you do, though, so if you value your privacy, unplug, and move to log cabin within a cave...); Opera (my least favorite, but workable); Apple's Safari (different, may not work on a PC, but it probably will); Internet Explorer; and _________?
You could also uninstall Mozilla Firefox, completely, then re-install it, and try loading the page in question, again. Cheers!

x2 on the reloading the browser. Also shut down any add-ons you may have running - Ad-Block in particular. It may not be compatible with the upgrade and blocking stuff that shouldn't be.
To diagnose, you can go to Edit > Preferences, General tab in the box that comes up, and go to "Manage Add-Ons". There (should) be a tab that comes up that says 'manage extensions'. Disable all of 'em, then try reloading the page. If it does, then enable 1 or 2 extensions, reload. Keep going until it no longer does.

Try clearing the browser cache, they get corrupted fast. Go to preferences/advanced/network and click on the "clear now" button for offline cache storage. It works quite often.

make sure it's not a virus shiny, be the worse thing you can do to put your credit card info on the computer and have someone else get ahold of it. viruses can stop you from seeing captcha images, best thing to do is download malwarebytes for free and run a full scan. what are you running for antivirus?

OK,so apparently Norton is not a big hit.Like I said,I'm not 'puter savvy.
What does resource hog mean?...told ya,im not savvy I looked into the malware thing but it seems some of them are viruses themselves? Speedy pc pro, pc cleaner pro are two of the first ones to pop up on a google search. I didnt want to download something i was not familiar with so I looked into them. There were some reviews saying that those "cleaners" were some sort of a virus or something like that. How do you know which one to use?
|
|
Resource Hog means it takes a lot of resources (memory, CPU, etc) to run. Norton has gotten A LOT better in the last 2 years though. I used to use it, but it expired and I got some free stuff instead.
At work, we use Malwarebytes. Good stuff.
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.htmlIt DOES have a free version, and it's awesome. Don't feel as though you've gotta buy it.
AVG is decent as well. However, DO. NOT. RUN. THEM. AT. THE. SAME. TIME. Their heuristics (what finds viruses before there's a signature for 'em) will detect them in memory and delete them. You can have them installed but DON'T run AVG and Malwarebytes at the same time.
Essentially, each loads up in RAM (Random-Access Memory; the stuff that actually runs the computer) and they detect each other. And then they both crash. Shitty and bad.
No cliffs. Entire message is important.

realize that it has gotten better, but then they go and preload a bunch of other stuff on new machines that is a you-know-what to get rid of.
used to be a huge Norton fan but now just go with the simpler -- icluding Google Chrome for a browser.
still looking for a non-Thunderbird mail applicaition that works. tried Pegasus, don't like it; never liked Outlook but it doesn't come prelaoded with Windows 7 anyway; looks like I'll just use the [and why can't I remember the therm? too early Saturday morning] . . . online thing like gmail [now that's embarrassing!]

Just Google it, I usually download my software from cnet.com because I trust them. My experience with Norton is that it blows major ass, slows your computer more than any other AntiVirus and is the most attacked AntiVirus out there. Honestly I use avg free AntiVirus, malwarebytes, spybot search and destroy, and secunia psi and I do things on my computer that u prob would never do, lol, and they all protect me and all are free and can be found on cnet.com for download. Also they all combined hog up less resources than Norton AntiVirus does alone. Any other questions bout computers u can shoot my way shiny, went to boces for 2 years for it and going to college for it. Sent from my HTC Inspire™ 4G on AT&T

Resource hog means that it takes a lot of memory and CPU power away from your computer, which makes it run and load slower, and can conflict with other programs and make them not work Sent from my HTC Inspire™ 4G on AT&T

Thanks for the info Hellbilly. Now that I have the Antimalwarebytes downloaded( the one in the link CDA posted) do I still need my Norton? Is it virus protection,or just removal? Or should I just go find this free AVG?
|
|
The free version of Malwarebytes is basically just a scanner, it doesn't block things from entering the computer. AVG free will block things and is an Antivirus, and Spybot Search and Destroy is an Anti-Spyware program that is not only a scanner, but will beef up your firewall and help stop things from getting into your computer.
Here is a link for AVG download http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition-2012/3000-2239_4-10320142.htmlHere is a link for Spybot Search and Destroy http://download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.htmlYou don't have to scan all the time with each one of these programs, basically just scan with AVG and keep Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy up to date. You only really need to scan with the other programs for the first initial scan and when and if you think your computer might be infected.
Also, just because Malwarebytes only detected and removed 1 trojan does not mean there was only 1 infection, sometimes after removing 1 you can run the same scanner again and it will find more that were hidden deaper by the previously removed infection, which is why it is a good idea to run more than one program to make sure the infections are completely whiped out.
Remove Norton if you are going to run these programs otherwise they will conflict with each other and will make the computer slow and unstable. My experience says that Norton is a waste of money and it slows your computer down more than you think because I am sure your computer came with it and you have never run it without it. I have removed many a virus before that Norton has missed, and after I fix the computer I delete, put these free programs on, and it ends up increasing the speed as well.
Another great program to run to help speed up the computer and to help get rid of the registry entries Norton will leave behind after deleting it is CCleaner http://download.cnet.com/CCleaner/3000-18512_4-10315544.htmlIt is a simple program to operate and will clean out unused or broken registry entries, and will also clean up unused files that your web browser and other programs leave behind and don't use, and will not delete things you need unless you tell it to.
Sorry for the long post, but I am trying to be as helpful and informative as I can without actually being there to walk you through it. You have my email if you have any questions Shiny, and if you run into a snag I'll give you my phone # to help you through it.
Good Luck!
