idle trouble

phunmusicphan
I have a 1981 Honda CB750 Custom. I have had a lot of work done on it in the past year and a half. I just started it today after the winter. It isn't idling right. When I rev it up it will try to idle at 3000 rpm's. I messed with the idle adjust nob underneath the tank. It doesn't seen to adjust anything. I turn it one way and the other and I can't tell witch way is up or down. Is tight higher idle or is loose. Could this problem be something else.
please help

Just wanted to give you some kind of answer. The idle should be 1000+-100.If i were you i would adjust the knob 1/2 way until you find out the problem.Sounds like something got in a port or gunked up and needle. It is strange that it ran alright till you put it up.That makes me think that it is a minor problem but hard to guess what it maybe.Wasp nest in the carbs?

Hey, I'm no expert by any means, but I've put a lot of hours in on the carbs this winter/spring on my bike and I am having some idling trouble too.  After a complete (at least I thought it was complete at the time) carb break down/cleaning/rebuild, I could get it to run, but it wouldn't idle well, had to keep giving it throttle to keep it from stalling.  Today I pulled the carb rack out and checked the main jets which looked as good as when I cleaned them.  Then a buddy suggested that I check out the pilot (low speed) jets.  Well, I didn't take them out when I did my cleaning, etc. because they looked like they were part of the carb itself and I didn't think they came out.  After pulling them out today I realized they were plugged shut.  Since those are the jets that control the idle, I'm thinking that's my problem.  I have them soaking in carb cleaner right now and I will scrub them and put them back in tomorrow.  Hopefully it'll work!  Also, in regards to your idle adjust, by tightening the idle screw, you should be pushing your throttle back (more gas) and by loosening it, it should let your throttle come forward (less gas).  Hope that helps!
