ok, so new rear master cycliner, new plugs. new to me orginal air box,
kinda idleing ok....i bleave i have the hose'e correct, i bleave i have the air leaks fixed, so i let it warm up just fine, and get going on down the road, i hit fourth and go for the runner rpms, it sticks at 6 grand for a couple seconds then comes back down, hmmm ok i turn down the idle at the next stop. idles high all the way home.
the next day it is harder than usall to start, after it warms up i can not keep the idle normal. i am guessing that ethier a jet is now clogged or i have to resynck the carbs, since i now have the origanil air box,.

i have been chasing this high idle, and racing rpms for two.5 yrs i really want to fix it so i can ride it daily, i do not ride it daily because i do not want to hurt it seriously.'
prior to air box carbs were syncd to pod filters(bought that way), i am starting to lean towards something elese, i have already given the mechanic 1200 in labor so i started thinking he was dicking me, and with my bad luck niether him or i can nock the idle down, please help, after this then it is just a tranny rebuld and makeing her look preety, so i can picture and post,
i did the air leak via started fluid, i checked on both sides of carbs, and where the rubber mounts meet the motor did i miss any thing?

It sounds like a vacuume leak to me. However if you have CV carbs the leak could be in any number of places. Even inside the carbs.

I'm thinking either a vacuum leak or the air jet isn't tuned right, though at 6k rpm that really doesn't come into play at all.
How's your boots? Any cracking or dryness? Are your clamps original? If not, are they the worm style? If so, I personally didn't like them. I felt they were too wide, and would slide off a little. Caused leaks of their own.

hello every one and thank you for the response's
here is another detail, that i forgot to mention, i was in a hurry on my way to work. it will idle fine untill i take off, then while moving the rpms match the speedo. such as 40 mph, equals 4 ,000 on the rpm and so on. but this only happens after it warms up.
the six thousand mark only hangs when i lay into the throttle.
when i slow or come to a stop, it does come back down, taking it's time, but never back to the idle i set at between 1,000 and 1,200,
niether needle bouces.
i have what i bleave is a inline four carb system. i do know that they are connected by a bar that does not have a screw end on either side.
another issue, i know it plays into it but i don;t know how, i have never been able to get it start easily unless it was really warm out side, such as 65 f or better.
with choke or no choke, so by the time it is warmed up i have already confused things, idle nobe, choke,
i mean some times it would take almost 15-20 mins just for it make a noise where i found a glimer of hope. i know this is going to result in a new starter, but i just love this bike, for some reason it stands out from all the other i have had, retty bad when i need a back up battery just to start it.

i have both clamps on it, i went crazy on them cause of fustration. i did check the rubbers and they appeared ok.
not sure what a air jet is thou, i will look in that

You mentioned the carbs came podded by the PO. Make sure the jetting is stock for your model if you've returned to the air box (which I gather you have). I believe that your model has 102 needle jets and 68 primary mains. It could cause problems if your carbs are still jetted for pods.

If the carbs are WAY out of sync, and you get them back in sync, you will probably have to adjust the throttle stop down. When the carbs are all working together, the engine runs more efficiently and the individual cylinders aren't working against each other.
Either do a bench sync, or an on-the-bike sync with gauges. If you can find a shop that works on these old bikes, you can expect to pay about $40-80. Beforehand, though, make sure your carbs are nice and clean, with no blockages or dirt in the bowls or jets, carb boots are tight, and no vacuum leaks at the boots or at the sync ports (where the sync gauges plug in). If the rest of the engine is stock (mufflers, air filter), set the mixture to the factory settings. Then hand it over to them.
Or just pay TOOLS's airfare, and he'll do it for a half pound bag of Peanut M&Ms.

My plan is to completly orginate this bike as much as possible. Once the motor is complete,I would like to change the seat and the put on risers for comfort. I am not sure the difference between the bench synch and the other how ever, i am fourtunet enough to have a man local thathis speality is these older bikes.
I am pretty sure i will beable to drop it off with him on monday. I open the bowls via the drain screws and they all flowed evenly, i did them on at a time starting with the last one first, i again sprayed with brake cleaner, and fund no reving. not being funny but i am out of ideas on the air leak, unless it is that n little t nipple in between the carbs the hose would not fit just right, other then that it must invisible...lol
seriously if tools is interested and lives in the usa i would glady fly him in to do the tranny job, just talking bout it has me nervous....hahha
i plan on haveing the mechanis get it right then i wil have a starting point to work with, so come this time next year i can buy what ever tools i need to continue the proper maintance,

Brake cleaner is dicloronated water and doesn't burn so it wont raise the idle speed when sucked in a vacuum leak.
Try carb cleaner instead.

High idle is usually a lean condition.
"two.5 yrs?" Is that 2-1/2 years??
This problem is not going to get fixed until the facts get organized.It is fragmented and scattered.

What kind of exhaust system?
Then a list of main jets and secondaries.
The the idle jets and needle position in the slide.
Also if the diaphrams on the slides are in good condition.
If any of the rubber diaphrams are split it will never idle right or run right.
PLEASE stay on this thread and do not change the name of the thread or start a new thread.
The problem with the motorcycle is like this thread. It is scattered thinking.
Carbs are fixed LAST after all other problems are corrected like, (new plugs).
BTW....It is believe the idle is ok. Not "I bleave the idle is ok."

You cannot do a bench sync with CV carbs.
It must be done when the engine is running.
Syncing the carbs is basically getting all of the slides to open at the same time.
That is within .007 thousandths of each other and then the idle will be right also,
with the help of the vacuum gauge at idle.
With CV carbs the slides are not mechanically connected to the throttle.
But the butterfly that opens in the carb causes a pressure drop. So all of the butterflys
must open at the same time and fully close and fully open.

Next, you can do somewhat of a bench sync... but it is usually for total rebuilds, crank up the idle speed screw until a small drill bit (1/16th or less) just fits with little drag in the main carbs slide (#3 ?). Then adjust all the rest to the same drill bit drag. But that only gets you close, then a vacuum gauge set is needed to properly dial it in as you said Lucky 1.
Finally, Don't even get me started on the "Spell Check". This thread is hard to follow, but there are times I suck at spelling. Plus, I've leaned with the "World Wide Web" not everyone on forums has English as their primary language. Imagine if we joined a German, Danish, or Japanese based forum.

thank you for your forwardness. what happens is i look around proir to posting, reading and learning so to speak. while doing this i get lost. ihave recently learned how to find my post under my screen name and that should help slow down, what appears to be random babble.
secondly. haveing to leave school early to help with the family finacialy, my spelling and grammar are way off. How ever to correcte this, when i have a long winded state ment, i can do in micro soft word b4 posting here.
