motor oil check with no center stand??

what kinda motor oil is best for these bikes? 78f matterafactly? i have no center stand. is it ok to just check the oil level holding the bike upright?

As far as the oil, I have seen a lot of people talking about Shell Rotella T6. Also, I know Tools uses Texaco Havolin 10W-40 and likes it well. I also went with 10W-40 and think its a pretty safe bet unless you're in some sort of extreme climate (I'm in Chicago where it gets both hot and very cold).

I also lack a center stand and just check it while its upright (best to have a friend hold it). If you really wanted to simulate the center stand, you could pick up the back of the bike about 1" in the air
