The neutral light stays on even when in gear.  Is this as simple as a blown fuse??

No it would not be a fuse. There is a switch that shows when you are neutral and most likely it needs cleaning or is broke.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

The neutral light comes on when the switch is grounded against the shift drum. If it is staying on, the wire to the switch must be grounding some where. The most common place for this to happen is at the sprocket cover. I would take the cover off and check there. I have seen the wire pinched there many times.
