new exhaust questions

alehman
I'm replacing the exhaust on my 79 and I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions. When I removed the old exhaust, I don't think there were any rubber gaskets at the mouths of the headers. I might be wrong though--- the exhaust ports in the engine are caked with blackness and I'm not sure if there are/once were rubber parts that have either disintegrated or melted. Are there supposed to even be rubber gaskets, or just well-fitting metal? All I have are half-circle pieces, 2 per header, that form collars under the flanges. Anyone have any good photos/descriptions of how the exhaust is supposed to connect to the engine? My manual doesn't seem to say...

There definately shouldnt be any rubber in there, would not be able to withstand the heat.

Looks like according to this diagram part #3 is a gasket of some sort.

I have not taken my exhaust off before so am not sure if there are supposed to be gaskets in there or not, but I am sure someone else on here will confirm that for you before long.

There is supposed to be a copper crush washer for every header. They are round when you first install and the collars that you have "crush" into them forming a seal.
It's recommended that you use a new set every time you take your headers off the motor.
They can be found on ebay for around $5
