78 CB750F wont start after I killed it

Mbolg
I killed my CB 750F on a ride and then the stater wouldn't work. I was able to push start it and ride it a few blocks and then the electrical system cut out and it died again. Now the electric start faintly clicks and the bike boggs out when I try an push start it. I charged the battery and it still will not start. I am assuming it is a problem with the charging system, but this is my first bike so I can't be sure what the problem is. Does anyone have any knowledge on this problem, prior to this the bike has been running solid for the past 6+ months.

It sounds like a bad battery. I would have it checked to find out if it is good. If it is good then start checking the charging system. The charging systems on the DOHC bikes are known to be unreliable.

Check and note the current battery voltage. Charge it. Crank it up. Measure voltage at the battery, then rev it. The voltage should rise from your initial charge rate. If not, the stator or regulator are dead. Or both. Check the charging system according to the service manual.

With a dead battery, the voltage isn't high enough to provide a good spark, if at all. Some bikes can be jump started with a dead battery because power is supplied to the CDI by a secondary winding on the stator. Points bikes cannot. The coil amplifies the 12v.

Weather or not a bike has points has nothing to do with whether it can be push/bump started or not. It has to do with the charging system. Since the CB 750s use an electro magnetic system, they must have some charge in the battery to charge the magnets, so that the charging system will provide enough voltage/amps to operate the ignition system. Engines with permanent magnet charging systems do not even need a battery to start.

Looks like he has a 78 SOHC. But they are reliable IF kept clean

How did you kill it?

First off you have to have a good fully charged battery. charge it over night then take it off the charger and let it sit for 2 to 4 hours. If you don't have 12.6 volts or higher after the 2 or 3 hours then you need another one. Make sure all of the cable connections are clean and tight.

I charged the battery and it still will not start.

Lets make sure we are talking about the same thing. Does it turn over but not run? Or does it not even turn over?
