Thanks Piute. I went ahead and joined a ZX owners forum and asked for help with getting some measurements.Yeah...that proved reeeeal helpful. Here is my first, and so far, only reply:
"I would just stop and reconsider what your attempting to do. If the bike already has a complete suspension then just leave it be, if it isn't broke don't fix it. Should it indeed be broken or missing, replace with the original parts. Its gonna be a hack job like no other to adapt."
LOL!!!Hackjob!!! Sounds like a good build name... ???

HackJob done right, there the clean and well gromed crew, then again theres more then 1 there.

HAHA.I dont need the whole bike.I just need one to get some measurements off of.
I got some goodies today! Thank you Mr.Tools!! So here are three items that were needed added to the corner of the shop where parts are piling up for this build. Now that I dont have to go out and purchase these I can spend that money on other items...like groceries!!!
I did hang the new swingarm in the pivot point real quick today. The pivot bolt is the same size as a CB but the swingarm itself is just a touch narrower. Two washers per side made it fit like a glove.Too easy, something is bound to go wrong...
Before I progress much farther collecting parts I was wanting you guys' & gals' opinion on a few things. I dont know if what I want to do with this bike is called street fighter, street tracker or whatever. I just want a modernized CB750. Kind of a "what would they look like now if they kept making them" type thing.
My thing right now is wheel choice. I have Comstars and spokes. My Comstars are both disc brake wheels, front and rear. My spokes wheels,I have three of and I can go either disc or drum on the rear. I am tempted to go with the spoke drum setup on the rear because drum brakes are so dang simple. But a "modernized" CB750 with spokes and a drum?...what do you think?
Another reason for wanting to go with the spokes is I have the rotors to do a dual disc for the spoke wheels.I only have one rotor for my Comstars. I really want dual disc on this bike, too.
I wonder just how modern you can make a spoke or a Comstar look???...
Any and all opinions,please!

Your welcome there Shiny. I thought of, you when I came across those shiny foot pegs.
It's not about what, you use to build a modern version of a CB 750, but how, you build a modern version of a CB 750. Just look at the new Mustang, Challenger, and Camaro.

Hmmmmmm??? I think the comstars have a late model sporty look, especially the earlier ones oddly enough? I have the later model ones on my bike and thyre kinda ugly and don't fit the look I'm going for. I've been looking at trying to fit spokes on mine but all the ones I'm finding are drum rears so if you decide not to use them would you be interested in selling? This time I'll actually buy them if you're selling them!

Everything is always for sale! I am leaning heavily towards the Comstars. I dont think I can pull off what I am wanting to do with spokes. Lets make surethey fit this time...at least my Comstars have been boxed up nicely lately! The box has been sitting at the speed shop with your name and addy on them forever. It has sat there so long we didnt know what it was.It didn't hit me til I saw your name on it.lol

hahaha sorry about that! I was planning on getting them then got side tracked and started looking into the spokes and really like the classic style of them. What year are they off of? We may have to get Tools involved again and see if I cant figure out the best and easiest way to swap them. Id like to keep the dual front brakes but dont have to and Id also like to keep the rear disc instead of swapping over to drums. Let me know what youd take for them and we can go from there! Ps-i LOVE the new build!!! and screw the guys on the other forum who doubt everybody! You would think by now that more people would have an open mind towards vehicles especially with all the wild customs being produced. Ive learned theres not much you cant do to any vehicle as long as you have the tools and some know-how or money. Keep it up man! I cant wait to see the progress!

No problem Slow. The spokes I have are actually the original wheels off my '76F.All the SOHC's willhold the same wheel.I understand the rear is a bolt-on between the SOHC & DOHC. The front is supposed to need spacers made up. I have no personal experience, though. We'll see if they work, then I'll get you some good pics. They are nice, but not perfect. Then we'll go from there.I'm not looking to get rich off these wheels, you know.
Question: The rear axle on a CB is 20mm o.d. . My swing arm is 11 1/2 wide,so a stock axle wont reach across.Does a GL have a wider swingarm?I can get an axle made, but it would be great to find a 20mm axle that will just work.
The axle of a ZX6 is on 16mm.I'm going to have to machine out the ears to hold the 20mm.Seems like a better idea than running a bunch of bushings. Not a big deal.
I wonder if a length of grade 8 20mm all thread would do the trick? What do y'all think?
If you know of anything that might fit shout at me,please! Thanks

Well, they're not exactly the same Comstars as the 750s use, but my '84 Shadow has dual disc brakes up front. Check THIS LINK for a couple of pics of said bike. Mine has a drum rear as well.
Maybe this is do-able?

Sweet! Is the front wheel dual disc and is the rear disc also? Sorry I'm jacking your thread with more wheel talk haha

When switching the rear wheel from a 77-78, or a DOHC to a 76, or earlier SOHC, you will need to use the 76, or earlier cush drive (the part that the sprocket bolts to) since the 77, and later are 3/8 inch wider. Or, you can get an offset front. sprocket from Cycle-X. Either way it is a bolt in job.
As, for using all thread, for a rear axle. Bad idea. I'm not sure about the Gold Wing axle, but I can find out, for, you.

Tools, you are right about the all thread.I meant bolt. Thanks for keeping an eye on me.
My air compressor decided to do a little rotating mass lightening trick tonight. Poor execution. This compressor locked up 6 or 7 years ago when the oil drain plug rattled out if it. I worked the crank back and forth til it freed up and it has running fine ever since. I guess it was just a matter of time So....I shoved the one dangling rod up out of the way of the crank ( it sounded bad,but hilarious),filled it back up with oil(no need to use a funnel this time)and duct taped the hole shut. So far so good! Surprisingly, no oil is leaking and the recovery is not as bad as expected. It even seems to be running ok as far as balance goes. I cautiously put my hand on it and it feels real smooth! Who needs two pistons?! Lets see how long it lives this time!

Ok, you named the bike "hackjob"
How about "deathtrap" for the compressor?

Maybe, you need a REV limiter?
