Alternative to spring scale?

seestheday
So, I need to measure the cam chain wear using this technique and I don't have a spring scale.

To save myself $20, could I just hang 29lbs of weight and measure it that way?  Any reason why that wouldn't work?

29 lbs. is 29 lbs. is 13 kg is 13 kg...  Yes, it would be the same, as long as you can hang it straight down.  The advantage of the spring scale is that you can achieve the force in any direction, independent of gravity.  If you can hang the weights properly, it will be the same.  Good luck!  Cheers!

Well, sees, you live in Canada.  As I understand it, you CAN'T use non-metric measurements, so 29 lbs is out of the question.  You CAN, of course, use 13 kg as permitted by Canadian weights and measures law.

OK, I'm being a smart ass.  It's been that kind of morning.

You definitely do not need to use the spring scale.  Hang one sprocket from the ceiling, hang a strong hook to the other one, and start hanging weights.

LOL, strangely we all still talk in pounds for weight and feet/inches for height.  (E.g. I'm 6 feet tall, and 175 lbs - nobody says they are 183cm tall and 79 kilos).

When I lift weights at the gym, they're all labeled in pounds, not kilos.

Everything else seems to be metric, including distances strangely, so metric for distance, but imperial for height...

Lol, I actually just started fishing again after a long hiatus. I used to be a country boy, but moved to the city after high school.

Good call on the fish scale, I was able to borrow one from a friend.

Looks like I need a new B cam chain.  Spec is 6.97 inches, and mine was stretched to 7.25.  It didn't look too bad, but that is way past spec.
