... and added an additional $2,500 or so to the final cost. I originally set my budget at $4800 for the rebuild including paint powder coat, etc
Okay so last week I decided to get my engine overhauled. I took it to a shop and when he saw the engine the owner of the shop went orgasmic. When I told him to clean it up so I could paint the engine he said you aren't going to paint this, I will polish it up for you and he said, you will like it. OkayYYYYYYY, then I asked him to take the lower part of the engine apart and just replace the seals. No. What, what do mean no! I will take apart every part, examine it, measure it an rebuild it with new washers, seals, nuts, bolts etc. it will be "AS NEW". It may not run better than when it was new but, it will run as if it were new. Good as new to him means
good as new. Alright so I'm seeing dollar signs. He put me at ease by saying he never charges for actual hours he puts into an engine... he may stare at a part for an hour before he decides what to do.
Okay so, $1000 estimated is now a good $2500.
I was going to make a seat and pan... decided against it. I went to an upholsterer to look at leather sample to cover my stock seat. I'm figuring $350 at most. he looks at the seat starts to tell me what it needs and how it needs to be reshaped and built up and cut down and gel insert and a pony, and a red rider pedal wagon, and a stocking leg lamp and... anyway he starts talking $1000 in labor.... whoa! Then he shows me one that he did for another guy, I almost lost my load... take me to your leader so he can empty my pockets... I need it.
So now that I have a show quality engine and a show stopping seat design how can I go cheap on the paint, powder coat and mods, the truth is I can't. I see $10,000 in my future. Costs are just a function of cash flow and time. If Jesus were here' I'd lock him in the garage with a 5 gallon bucket of water and see what he could do... water/wine, water/bread, water/fish, water/cash. But, he isn't so I will still spend 400/month as planned... I'll just add twice as many months to the project and do it up old school retro.
What was I gonna say? I forget.
