Just picked up a '79 CB750k for my latest project

drnickpsyd
My name is Nick and I just picked up a 79 750k for a killer deal; currently have a 99 ducati 900ss and a yamaha yz426f that i built last year. The plan is to completely cafe it over the course of the next couple months (before summer); I stumbled into this forum tonight and it's absolutely fantastic!!  I'll probably ask some n00b questions here and there, but I am absolutely stoked to start this journey!  The bike does turn over and run, but from what I have been told and heard it is in need of rod bearings, so that'll be the first order of business just so i can get riding. It was painted by the previous owner and it is not the greatest looking thing on the block, but in a few months i hope that to not be the case....

cheers!

Nick

Congratulations on the purchase.  That King/Queen seat is rare as hen's teeth, for a '79.  I'd suggest e-Bay'ing it for the best price.  Good luck with the project.  Cheers!

Does the engine make a lot of noise to indicate it is rod bearings? those generally do not fail by themselves.
A cafe does not always lend itself to the dohc bikes with the stock tank, however, a street fighter style would look really nice. But you are right, the white has to go!

Welcome to the forum. I also wonder about the rod bearings. They hardly ever go bad. You would have to run the bike without oil to wear them out. When the carbs are out of sync it makes these engines sound like they are going to fly apart.

thanks everyone! a far as the engine noise goes, im thinking it's a rod bearing, but I'm not certain as I've yet to crack it open, but its got a familiar noise. I've seen quite a few dohc cafe style bikes that I'm taking inspiration from....  it's a different route but that's the story of my life!

Get it running and sync the carbs or at least pull the clutch in. If the noise changes, good chance it is not rod bearings. These engines sound like washing machines full of rocks if the sync is really bad.

thanks for the tip re-run, I'm really hoping it isn't rod bearings, but when I get her home tomorrow night the teardown and diagnosis will begin!

Have you adjusted the Cam Chain?  They tend to make a lot of noise when loose, also.  Best of luck.  Cheers!
