Lubing new cables?

cdaiscool
Ordered new cables from Vintage CB750 and am getting ready to put them on the bike.

Do they need to be lubed first? I find various posts that say yes, no, yes unless OEM, etc.

Any clues how to find out if these need to be? And if so, with what? I have the little cable luber, so an aerosol will work since I've never gotten the funnel or bag-and-oil method to work, even overnight.
Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

I am just the opposite. I can't get the lubber to work. Weather or not to lube them is up to you. Nothing says they need lubed. I hardy ever lube cables unless they are old, and feel rough.

If you lubricate the steel cables, you delay them rusting through.  If you don't lube them, they will eventually rust through -- how long it will take is an unknown.  My '93 rusted through its choke cable after 19 years; my '79 never had an issue with cable rust, 30 years on.  You can play it safe, and lube the cables, or roll the dice.  Lubing the cables won't harm them in any way.  Cheers!

I like to use a dry cable lube made just for these kind of cables. It stays put and can be "dripped" down the cable just before installing. This is my favorite right now....goes in wet and dries to make a non dirt attracting silky smooth cable....it uses molybdenum-disulfide as a base, there's no slicker dry lube out there than that stuff.

My local shop has it for $15, so it's a bit cheaper than J&P.
