My 79 cb750k ltd cafe project

cafeloco
Hi, been lurking around on here for a couple months now and finally decided to start a build thread. I picked up two 79 cb750k 10th anniversary bikes back in august and am working on turning one of them into a cafe racer.  Im totally new to this so any tips tricks etc. are greatly appreciated.
anyway on to some pics

when i first picked them up

got it running which i think had some serious negative effects on the engine. when i went to change the oil it looked like a swamp. i think someone had gone crazy with that paint on gasket stuff or something.

this is some of what i wiped out of the oil pan

tried to pull the engines by myself VT style... didnt work

got my mom to help me and this is where im at now. the bike has to be done my mid april so there should be some pretty regular updates

I also have alot of parts for sale, check out my thread in the classifieds section if you need anything

You may want to disassemble the engine you plan to use. If someone used silicone sealer in there it can have serious ramifications for the lubrication passages. The silicone breaks off into tiny bits and plugs things up. I don't think you have to totally rebuild it. Just pull off all the covers you can and maybe try to flush it with kerosene or a cleaning solvent to get as much out as you can.

I am guessing you are a car mechanic by the way you removed the engines. The way to remove DOHC CB 750 engines is to put a floor jack under them. Then remove the bolt on frame tube on the right side of the engine. Then you can just roll the engine out the side. Then Mom can bring out cookies.

cafeloco
thanks for the input everyone!

alehman - im in charlotte, about half hour south of burlington. forgot to get pictures of the tank, ill write myself a note for tomorrow

rich - i am planning on using the engine out of the parts bike because its in far better shape and im probably going to rebuild it or at least do the gaskets

shinyribs - no supermoto unfortunatly

tools & alpha750 - i did remove the frame piece, and once i got another set of hands i used the jack method sliding the engine out of the frame and then dropping it on blocks. i didnt really know what i was doing so it was easier with two people.

on to an update, i built an engine stand thanks to a handy thread i dug up by tools

No supermotoBut you do have welding skills/equipment...and more than one bike...stretched frame twin engine build??? Think about it HARD before you say no. If I can convince one of you guys to build one I wont feel so compelled to it myself
