Make a plan...  Work the plan, Baby!

That DVM you bought from Sears is really nice -- professional grade, pretty much.  The Duty Cycle, and Frequency Meter, are two functions you likely will never use.  No worries, as the other features will more than pay for the meter, over time.

I used Sunpro Automotive Volt Meters on two of my bikes (http://www.sunpro.com/product_category.php?id=276).  Whatever Volt Meter you go with, be sure to wire it directly to the battery terminal, with an in-line fuse, and a relay (connected to a switched circuit, to disable it when the key is out), to get an accurate reading.  If you tie into an Accessory wire, you may get less voltage than what is actually at the battery terminals, as there is a small voltage drop across every connector in the wiring.  Cheers!

Re: My bike…1974

I used to build hot rods, so I always run the voltmeter to the battery, with a good connection. I used relays with most of my higher power accessories too, such as those old 100W driving lights. Inline fuses or an accessory fuse block were always used as well.

I haven't made one in a while, but frequency would have come in handy when I was building my own stereo crossovers and speaker enclosures, and after re-gluing a torn speaker surround. Duty cycle would have been very nice to have when I was troubleshooting some defective injectors that came with a top end set up for my '71 Camaro. I think it was a Holley system. Two of the injectors were performing at less than 60%, which is why the engine I built for 450HP was coming up way short.

I likely won't need those features in the NEAR future, but I will eventually get into them again. :)

I've been toying with the idea of using a 1 1/2" mini voltmeter….
http://www.autometer.com/cat_gaugedetail.aspx?gid=2450&sid=1
I kind of like the look, and my new speedo and tach are only 2 1/2" so I don't want the voltmeter near that size. I kind of want to tuck in between them so it almost goes unnoticed.

Sorry, Mark.  I forgot you were the other Elect. Tech. on this board.  I like that auto VM you picked out:  color coded readings make it easy to interpret, no thought required, other than, "green is good"...  Cheers!

Re: My bike…1974

Me, a tech? Nope. No training in it at all. I have been quite successful in being able to find books, magazines, and websites that had the necessary information on what to test, how to test it, and what tools to use. I can follow directions like nobody else! lol There's been more than one puff of smoke because of a sentence I missed in the directions!  But for the most part, I've had good luck getting it right….which is likely why my friends seem to think I'm way smarter than I really am.

I'm finally getting less hours at work (under 55) so maybe I will finally have time to start on the bike!

Beauty of a bike, i love the color scheme for that year as well as many other vintage 750's.
I had one just like it about 30 years ago.

It's going to get painted when the cafe conversion gets done…unless I get a second bike to use for that while I ride this one!

I truly hope that you get a second bike to do the cafe build, this one is in such great shape for a good old classic.
Whatever you decide, i look forward to the pics of your project!

That is one of the reasons I am keeping my eye out for a second one, this one is nicer than what I expected to find.

Has anyone used these guys for brake hoses? They've got a nice cafe master cylinder too, just $70 with brake light switch, which makes a good match to the one piece hose that replaces all three on mine now.

http://slingshot-cycles.com/

I just noticed my oem brake lines are already cracked and not routed correctly. The top line is severely pinched from being run at the wrong angle. Time for new lines!

…also thinking of this rear swing arm…looks well made. I've got to send an email and ask just how much wider of a rear tire can be fit. This would be sweet on my cafe.

That arm does look nice.I hope you have better luck contacting Carpy than I ever did.If that doesn't work out for you voxonda builds a dresda-style swing arm too that I am sure is top notch.

Sounds cool, but I don't see a link in the parts section. Google turns up a Cycle One in Orlando FL but all they have is hard tail kits.

Here is Cycle one's web site. http://www.cycleonemanufacturing.com/ They might not have the CB 750 swing arm listed yet, but give Kate a call, or e-mail, and ask about it.

Re: My bike…1974

I'll email them. I noticed they sell the new axles for $89.99. One thing I do like about Carpy's rear swing arm is that the new, longer axle is included, along with the front bronze bushings. If the Cycle One swing arm doesn't include these, the cost may be closer. I will check and let you guys know what kind of price they're getting and how long the build time is. I really want to clean up that rear swing arm, the stocker looks kinda crude…even for a cafe.

A DOHC swing arm is a cheap way to clean up the rear.
