So the shift shaft has to sit in between the two holes?

Its hard to explain, pictures would be better here, but I do not have any. Shiny just built an engine, maybe he will be along soon to help.

I just got a new laptop and havent swapped any of my pics over yet. So I'm without any files at the moment. It should all be in the FSM, but sometimes they are kinda vague.

What two holes are you referring to? Do you have any way to take pics of what you are looking at?

Re: Stuck in first gear

I got the two cases put back together and got the gears all lined up. But it seems now that with the shifting mechanism re installed it will only shift down into first and back into neutral but it won't go up into any other gear? Please tell me this is something in the mechanism and it won't require me to pull the cases back apart.

Are you spinning the gears when trying to shift? If they are not spinning, the teeth can hit each other and prevent the gears from sliding into position. Also, you should always have the clutch disengaged when attempting to shift gears.

Re: Stuck in first gear

no I was just holding the clutch in and trying to shift though the gears. Before I had sealed the cases I dry tested to see if it worked and I was able to spin the shifting drum all the way through the gear selection. I'll try turning the gears as I'm shifting or re install the shift mechanism. I'm just scared I'm gonna have to pull the motor back out lol.

Re: Stuck in first gear

Okay little update. I was able to go through all the gears while spinning the gears. Alittle stress off my shoulders. But since my clutch is installed shouldn't I have to hold the clutch lever in as I spin the gears? Sorry i feel like I'm asking noob questions I'm just trying to understand as much as I can from this thing

Yes you should have to hold the clutch lever in. I would be inspecting the clutch installation now. Shiny did a writeup on installing a clutch awhile back. I know a search will bring it up.

Re: Stuck in first gear

Yeah I followed his write up on how to install the clutch. But it still doesn't seem to need the clutch to engage the gears. And shifting through the gears seems alittle stiff.

Don't listen to Tools. He's great, but he rides automatic. Start does he know about clutches? ;)

Just teasing, bud.

But seriously, you can shift through all the gears without using the clutch. Motor off, back tire in the air... You'll be able to shift just fine as long as the tire ( or primary sprocket, since I think you've just got an engine on a table)is free to rotate, or even if you help it a little. It'll be a little clunky, but it'll shift just fine. Sounds to me like you got it all sorted out!

But if it is in gear, he would still need to turn the engine over if the clutch was engaged.

To do what? Maybe I got confused.

With the engine off, and back tire / primary sprocket allowed to turn, you can shift through all the gears without pulling the clutch in.

Just like shifting without using the clutch. If the engine/gear/rear tire speed are all synched up you can shift to the next gear without using the clutch. Same thing here, but easier, since the engine speed is zero.

If you are spinning the rear wheel, and shift into gear with the clutch engaged, you would then also be turning the crankshaft, thus the engine over.

Nope. lol. It'll just click to the next gear. Give it a try sometime.

Think of this. A bikes got a stuck clutch from sitting. Can't be disengaged. What is the first thing you try? Click it up to high gear and rock that puppy back and forth. Point is, your shifting to hi gear with an engaged clutch and non-turning crankshaft.

But I think we're getting off point now. :p

You can shift gears if the teeth line up, but once it is in gear, you cannot spin the wheel without turning the engine, unless the clutch is disengaged. You know, bump starting.

Re: Stuck in first gear

I was able to get her out for a ride finally and it shifted fine through all the gears. Took a break and when out
For another ride. This time first gear was slipping as well as forth. Smh so I was riding back home and in second gear the rear wheel locked up on me and the released. I'm so confused what's going on. Are the gears not lining up causing the wheel to lock on me?

Re: Stuck in first gear

What do you mean by "slipping?" Did you give it throttle, and it did not go faster, or did it come out of gear? The only way a "transmission" could lock up a rear wheel, would be if two gear cogs engaged at the same time, gears seized on a shaft, or something broke, and jammed in the gears. Usually when something like this happens, you will have a nice new hole in the case that will allow easy inspection. Also I am glad that you did not lay the bike down when the wheel locked up as that is what usually happens when a wheel locks up unexpectedly going down the road at speed.

Yeah it was a little scary having it lock up on me but I kept it upright. I mean slipping as in popping out of gear and just Reving the throttle. It sounds like the gears are not lining up together and there is a nice new chattering noise in my casing
