Clutch not disengaging, shift paw fell off/loose. I would check the clutch, and them pull the cover behind the shift lever to inspect.

Pulled the left side shifting case to check and see if anything was bent damaged or had fallen off but everything looks good. Clutch cable seems fine. I guess it would have to be the shifting forks.i was having some problems with first gear slipping out and  Since I can't even seem to pop it into nutral rocking it back and forth.

"i was having some problems with first gear slipping out " Pertinent information that should have been included in the first post. Remove the engine, turn it upside down, and remove lower half of case, then replace damaged transmission parts. Not as hard as it sounds.

This is true.

There a couple case bolts hiding hiding under the starter, the rest are easy to see.

I spent a few hours last night pulling the motor. Gonna crack it open today and see what's the problem. Definitely way easier pulling this than my car motor lol.

There is one in the manuals thread at the top of the home page here that you can download for free.

Re: Stuck in first gear

I've been struggling for the past two days trying to split the cases. All bolts have been removed as well as the shifting linkage side and clutch side as well starter cap had been pulled and the crank cover too. Is there something that I'm missing. Do I need to remove the outer clutch basket or just the clutch itself. Must frustrating thing I've put myself through in awhile.

You also need to remove the stator, and the point plate.

Once you remove the starter cover you need to remove the starter itself. Then there will be two bolts hiding underneath the actual starter motor.

This seems so familiar to me, those two bolts hiding under the starter. Tools, can you, or anyone else, confirm this?

Yup I have all that removed and out the way. It doesn't seem like it's ready to pry apart but I looked over it many times but still can't seem to find what's holding it together.

Re: Stuck in first gear

I finally managed to get them split! It was the bolts under the starter TOOLS. now that I have them apart what are some wear signs I should be looking for. Or what could cause my tranny to be stuck in first gear as well as popping out of first gear.

Look for worn, or damaged/bent parts. Try moving parts to see if anything is stuck. If you have not downloaded the factory service manual yet, now would be a good time to do it, you can download it from the manuals thread at the top of the home page, it has detailed instructions for inspecting the transmission parts.

Re: Stuck in first gear

Everything visual looks okay. There is some noticeable grinding marks on most inner shifting fork. Besides that nothing seems stuck or bent. I'm going to get a digital micro gauge and see how worn the forks are.

The numbers that you sometimes see on castings are for their reference, not ours. It's how they manage quality control. So if the castings 'A2' start coming out way out of spec, then the foundry knows they need to take a look at the molds for 'A2'. Hope that makes sense.

If you saw grind marks it's safe to say you found your problem. Were the marks only on the levers, not on the gears, too?

Re: Stuck in first gear

There was grind marks on the fork itself didn't look like the neighboring gear had any wear to it. But I threw in the new forks and ran it through the gears. Everything seems to be functioning properly again.

Is the shifting fork rod supposed to slide all the way into the hole so it's sitting flush with the outside? It seems to slide out when I'm running it through the gears

There is a special retaining bolt that hols the shift shaft in place.
