Cda, sorry to hear about all the trouble you're having.  I did learn something from this thread though, so thanks for documenting everything.

I was out riding and leaned hard into a slow turn and felt my back tire wash out a little bit when it shouldn't have.  I remembered this thread and checked the tire pressure.  It was at 25 psi, so I filled them back up immediately and so far so good - great traction again.

I have economy Kenda tires on it for what it's worth.  Other than the pressure dropping since I had them put on at the start of the summer I've had no issues with them.

Meh, all part of getting the best ride out of something, right?

I'm glad it was able to help, 19? pages - I hope someone's able to get something out of this.

I was just asked by Shinko to send them pictures of the problem area, so we'll see what happens. Unfortunately, it's not really visible. Only by touch can you feel the bumps. But it's promising they didn't go straight to "NOT OUR DEAL!" Maybe customer service lives still...

If they are lose even a little the rim will move off center under load like making a turn (feel like sliding out).  Some could be broken and you would not even know it unless you check them. Take a wrench that fits the nipples and see if they are tight.  Don't over tighten them. That could pull the rim off center. Just make them snug all the way around. Go around a few times if nessarry.  Oh and another thing, let the air out of the tire to do this and get the wheel off the ground.

What will the spokes have to do with the bike feeling like its on ice? Or the tire being bumpy?

Okay.

So just got back from a 6-mile ride. I've got a car meet I'm going to Saturday that's 30 miles away, wanted to ride out. Well, instead I will be taking my truck.

The bike, after a bit, felt like I was riding on ice. Even when I wasn't leaning it, she still kept wanting to slide around. I didn't dare to lean into it, though honestly it probably would have been okay. I'm betting that if I get the tire on sidewall, the tire will be fine. But I'm not going to try. I don't feel like going down willingly.

I don't know if it's just me, or the tire is seriously dangerous. I can definitely feel bumps in the center tread. Can't tell on the sides, since the tread's brand-new and catches your hand.

Details on the tire:
Shinko SR712R 130/90-17 68H. Still practically brand-new. The tire still has nubs on the side, and I don't mean just down low! The tread is quite deep.

I've already looked the Shinko USA dealer site over, and apparently you can only get a warranty from wherever you bought it. I'm going to e-mail them anyways, but have a feeling it's going to go nowhere. They'll probably bow out under "Only original purchaser!" and "Only sold-through dealer!" Maybe I'll get lucky regardless.

Thanks for the offer for the tire btw, but I'll pass. I'm not wanting to try a super-old tire, and 5+ is getting there. Also, come next check next week I can afford whatever I need. Just need to get there first. Until then, bike is officially parked. :/

Still need to find a garage, too. That's also starting to piss me off.

How I've done this in the past (someone chime in if I'm telling him to do something half-way!) is to just take your combination wrench, and lightly tap each spoke with it. If a *ting* sound is the result, they're tight. If it's closer to a dull *thunk* then it needs to be tightened. Take it for what it's worth. ;)

Re: 1981 CB750K - Repair/Tune-up

So, just sent a few tire shots to Shinko. They said they believe the spokes are at issue. I did the thud test and quite a few were 'thud' versus ting. Should I just replace the spokes, given that they're rusty? Or should I instead just take the tire to a shop and have them tighten them up and make sure the wheel's true and balanced?

Shots of both spokes and tires. Shots with descriptions can be seen here:
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10100815630397062.2694160.12101664&type=1&l=7571e15f32

Rusty spoke. Many look like this.

Tool for putting the spokes in? Only 1 of these, and its not part of the spoke itself it looks like.

I like this artsy-ish shot. Sue me.

Showing the wear from running the tire low. Yes, the scrubbed-part of the tire is from running it 10 lbs low.

You can see the tire's bulge/bump here.

Each white line = a bump crest (highest part). I only did a portion of the tire; it's all around it.

I think the rim needs a little love.

I would try just tightening them until you get a ting out of it and then spin it.If it runs true, give it a go. Strictly my very un-professional opinion.

That does suck! It's brand freaking new!!! It's hard to believe that tire has been ridden at all.

Oh,that lead fishing weight looking doo-dad is a wheel/tire weight. Some guys prefer those on their spokes vs. stick-on weights .

Yep. They said they thought they saw one that was broke - I took the shots on my phone and e-mailed 'em from there, so didn't see 'em on a big screen. After I saw 'em on the computer posting on here, I saw it was the valve stem + rod from rear brakes. It looks like a section is just straight-up missing - not sure how a spoke could do that.

There ARE spokes that are 'thud'ing versus 'ting'ing. So it IS possible the hub is shaking, especially in a turn.

Still waiting on a friend to come over to help me get the tire off.

Re: 1981 CB750K - Repair/Tune-up

Put the bike on a stand to get the wheel off the ground, let the air out of the tire, slowly tighten the lose spokes one at a time.  Just tighten until they stop.  After all are like that then go all the way around the wheel turning them one eighth turn at a time.  If they feel real tight don't tighten them.  Do this until they all feel the same and do the sound thing if you want.
Even if a spoke is broken and it doesn't sound like you have any broken, I don't see how that can cause the issue with your tire.  Riding with low pressure could cause it.

Tire is not low on pressure. I verified it while cold, and it was 40 psi - the precise same that was on the sidewall.

By tightening some, and not others, that can easily pull the wheel out of round. I also don't know if some are corroded or not. By taking it to a pro, I'm taking myself out of the equation. Tire is off the bike, and in the back of the truck. I'm hopefully dropping it off tomorrow at a local bike shop, and going to use this to test them to see if they can do more larger things. Trust a little, then trust a lot. Right?

In other news, I've come across this. Any ideas? A result of the bike not tuned properly? Or something else?

Discoloration on the fuel bowl. Normal? Or evidence of something? I wouldn't think that is normal, at least in 600 miles or whatever I've got on the carb rebuild.

A leak? I'm not pulling these things apart AGAIN.

I'll run with it, then take care of it this winter with the motor. I just hope its not a sign of bolts backing out due to the ride or some shaking.

Id call it more of a seep than a leak. If it ain't dripping I wouldn't sweat it. Carbs do that wolf of times. A rag with a little with a little Carb cleaner and you'll never know it happened :)
