Re: 1981 CB750K - Repair/Tune-up

So, in addition to the cotton, I also found 2 air cutoff things destroyed. One was COMPLETELY obliterated and separated, one was getting there. So definitely am going to need to replace those. Also need to track down the mixture jet screws and such.

Also randomly found a piece of a leaf in the air cutoff. What the hell have these things done?!?!?

After today's BBQ (or before, if my buddy refuses to wake up - I don't like lazy people! ) I'm going to start cleaning out the carb bodies and everything. Looked into having them media blasted, but only found 1 place to do it (my bike mechanic) and he said he'd end up charging ~ $400 just for the blasting (he said it'd take a long time to get each one done). Screw that. And I don't know where else around here I could take 'em. I'll just use mineral spirits or carb clean and a brass brush to clean up the rust, and carb clean to get the oxidation out.

Here's pictures of what I'm talking about. Sorry for how long it's taken, I've been too busy. What could cause this? I'm also going to e-mail Randakk (got the kit from him a year ago and rebuilt the carbs then) and see what he says.

Shared the pics with him and just heard back. Apparently he's on vacation until the 17th, and will help me with figuring out wtf happened.

Meanwhile, says this is synonymous with greater-than-e10 fuels, or tank cleaners. I haven't ran anything through the tank, and I've always used gasoline from the pumps (which I think is now nationally legally allowed up to e15, and no way to know if its e10 or 15 or what).

Joy.

Hmmm...when I saw that earlier post(of the rotten rubber) I knew he was gonna come back with the ethanol fuel excuse. I'm sorry, and I hate to be blunt here, but when did the US finally outlaw leaded fuels???....Answer: first of 1996. Ok,so they added tetraethyl lead to gasoline in the '20's to provide anti-knock capabilities to increase engine compression and allow for greater power to be extracted from IC engines.<- Fact. In the '70's the US started phasing out leaded gas and it was ''all gone'' by '96. The oil companies used tetraethyl lead because it was a much, much cheaper additive than alcohol(ethanol).Even though they were full aware of the huge health concerns it was responsible for!!! <-Fact. So,when they took the lead away...what did they use to replace it??? Yep,you guessed it. There had to be SOMETHING added, and lead was out of the question(Thank God). Ethanol infused gasoline is not a new phenomenon. But it's an easy thing to lay blame on when rubber parts rot! Nobody wants to admit that modern day rubber has been ruined by the EPA and will no longer hold up like it used to.It's the same reason modern day tires rot off in just a handful of years,vs the ''old tires'' that I've personally used for 10+ years without any dry rot issues.What??...are they spraying the highways with ethanol to rot our tires now? Um,no.It's shitty rubber.

Sorry for the rant. I just hate when people get on the ''ethanol ruined my [whatever]'' bandwagon. Alcohol is a fantastic cleaning agent. Ever use an alcohol swab to clean something and find it leaves behind a gummy film? No. Because it won't. Again, sorry for the rant.

Sorry about your luck. Good luck on your bike buddy. I'll shut up now

Dude, you have no reason to shut up. I understand what you're saying totally. I can only hope he recognizes that this is likely a faulty product and helps me out with getting some new product. For all I know, this was a bad batch.

Those almost look like you soaked them on carb cleaner. Not saying you did, just that they look like they're in really bad shape.

Re: 1981 CB750K - Repair/Tune-up

I cleaned off the carbs with carb cleaner before I put these air cutoffs on a year ago, but that's the last time they ever saw carb cleaner.

Sucks that the bike's going to be down for most of June, into July now. I thought rebuilding carbs was supposed to be a once every few years thing. Guess I got more to learn.

Any recommendations on carb kits that aren't Randakk, since the last one didn't exactly pan out? Going to give him a chance to make it right first, but as he won't even discuss it until the 17th I would like a go-to plan if that doesn't get me anywhere.

We all know I have zero DOHC experience, but the rubber bits I've gotten for my carbs have all came from K&L. So far so good. Wish I could help more, but that's all I got.

That is odd. Randakks kits are highly respected and recommended in all sorts of Honda engines. Yea, you could go with K&L, or do the air cutout bypass mod and be done with them I guess.

Not that I'm aware of. It would once in a while, but no idea if the sound I was hearing was backfire or what. Even if so, could that have done this damage?

Also, still gotta figure out wtf caused the gunk in the #4 carb. Yes, that one is the one that was fuel starved and was also one of these destroyed cutoffs, so perhaps something got into it? I'm also wondering if riding in the freezing temps could have caused this? I did ride from freezing 20 deg. to warm 40's to 60's and back to freezing in a few days...

I just don't know enough about these things.

The temps would not have anything to do with the carbs messing up. I have gotten several carb kits from vintagecb750.com and never had a problem. If you want, send me your carbs, and I will sonic clean, and bead blast them, for you.

Hopefully tomorrow is much better and I can get everything caught up once and for all and I can get a phone call in.

Well, I am glad I was able to help as much as I could.

Sorry I haven't called, I have been busy with life unfortunately. Just tried to call you, I have a 616 area code. I will try again tomorrow. Will probably get the carbs packed up over this weekend and sent out Monday if I get ahold off you. Thanks again man, I really appreciate it!

Talked to TOOLS last night, once again reminded by how awesome this forum is.

Going to hopefully get the carbs off to him this weekend or Monday at the latest, and talk to RANDAKK this upcoming week as they won't talk while on vacation. If that doesn't pan out and he refuses to help me get stuff replaced, I'm going to order a rebuild kit from vintagecb750.com. Hopefully the parts come in quick, and I can get the bike finally going next weekend. Going to spend this Sunday (hopefully) getting the rear axle off the rear wheel (it's stuck to the brake cover), get the chain cleaned, and overall clean up the bike. Also get the oil changed out and ready for starting.
