You dont know? Anything you wanna know, just ask. Yeah, street fighter, street tracker...whatever it's supposed to be called. I was thinking more like Pro-touring. Whats in a name...?
|
|
What's in a name? Well, for starters, the English language helps all of us communicate easier. If I say the crap I took earlier stunk, I'm sure you know what I'm referring to simply by its name.
Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

I tore my forks apart to see if they were going to be reusable or not. There is some rust on the tubes, but nothing major and I know a guy in town that can redo the hard nickel plating. There is wear marks on the inside of the slider and on the tubes. It's deep enough that it is easily felt with your finger. Are they shot,or is this reusable?I dont think they were ever well cared for. When I popped the cap off I instantly could smell the definite aroma of gear oil.Yeah, this stuff was thick
I have not had any success in getting the old seal to come out if anyone has a trick for that.
Also,I have on fork that I can not get get damper rod to come loose. It is just spinning inside the fork when I turn the bolt.Any tricks for this, too? Obviously, I have not gotten that one apart to see the wear on it.

Hey Paul used(well put)The shop light on their for a beer or two (tea in yo case),When I heated the second for about 1/2 hr Lil hot to touch but could, popped out with bigg screw driver,"O" and put your new seals in freezer, for the time it takes to do both and they will slip in easy, they warm up fast, your still going to need the bigg azz socket to make it straight N such.
Hair dryer should work ,I was going to use the torch,Paul said would get way to hot.

When I get around to doing the seat and the tail I will definitely need 'glass done. This is going to be a slow build since it's just for fun and I already have a bike to ride.So it might be awhile getting to that point. Trying to go lightweight on the topside to help out this ol' top heavy pig.

Look at "My buddies POW/MIA" thread. It shows to use a heat gun to remove the seal, and to use an impact to remove the bolt. Also that gear oil was at one time ATF. It takes a beating in those forks. I doubt I would worry about the wear. It does not come into contact with the seal.

Ah,good idea Gunslinger.Thank you!
I didnt have an impact socket that fit it so i couldn't do it your way,Tools. I plum overlooked the heat thing. So the wear wont cause the tubes to rattle around in the sliders causing poor handling or anything like that? I cant believe there is not some sort of bushing in there.

The DOHC bikes have bushings, but they are, so small I can't see where they would do any good. Anyway as long as the tubes still fit with out rattling, don't worry about it.

That fork seal doesn't look all that different than a typical axle seal...I wonder if an automotive type seal puller would work well on those? I actually have one from the hot rod days.

I have been fooling with hotrods forever and have yet to buy an actual seal puller! I'm cheap.I just keep popping them out with my BFS I can feel what seems to be a lip that the seal butts up to,it doesn't allow you much room to pry against the back side.I just kep sliding off.I'll try heat when I get a chance.
Tools,I just have to overcome a mental hurdle when it comes to reusing these forks.Yes,there have signs of wear. No,they didn't rattle. It's one of those "better off that I didn't see that" sorta things. Thanks for the advice bud.

I had mine all tore up rubber cut off spring burried in it out, left on work bench left to work and Paul had it under lamp when got home and slipped right off easy, frozen one's back no prob.

Ok. I got my swing arm in. I have to get some measurements to get the monoshock setup right and cannot find any info on this. As usual,my googling skills suck at best.
Any chance anyone has a 85-87 zx600 laying around i can get some rear suspension measurements off of? Seriously,I am in a bind here. Zero progress until I get some numbers.
Me and my stupid ideas...
