Re: '81 CB750C "Rock-It"

Hoosier Daddy
I opened the float bowl drains and got nothing... pulled #1 float bowl and OH MY GOD!
Apparently one of the steps in my tank cleaning process did not get completely removed, the gas in my tank was full of grit and rust and the float bowls / fuel valve were filled with some horrible looking crystalized, amber colored GOO! All withing 15 minutes of running on the actual fuel tank then setting overnite. Silver lining I gues is I wasn't far from home when it happened.
So I spent this weekend removing the carb rack, disassembling the carbs and re-soaking the bowls and jets in Berrymans again. The fuel valves were stuck so hard I had to use needle nosed pliers to gently remove them. I used two cans of spray carb cleaner on all the passages in the bodies, polished the fuel valve seats with a Q-tip in polishing compound and used my Dremel with a felt cone to polish the fuel inlet valves themselves until all was siney once again. Then rinsed the tank, twice with kerosene and another couple of times with gasoline until clear.
Then Sunday evening I had it all back together, filled it about 1/2 way and took it for a ride... all is well again. WHEW! Now we shall see how the tank looks after setting.

Did get a nice day out of it and wound up snapping some decent pics before all hell broke loose on her maiden voyage.

Thanks Lucky, it is really appreciated.
Have gotten a couple rides in, logged about 30 miles and she's running good.
I painted the tank "Honda" emblems semi flat black and put them on, still need to bend up some small side covers for the electricals and then calling her DONE!

By all hell breaking loose do you mean an onslaught of twin cam power,or did something bad happen???

Bike looks killer Hoosier.  Good job dude! How are you liking the 712's so far?

Yeh yeh... I know, never done, should have said "Done for now"
By "All hell breaking loose" I meant the crap in the tank messing with my freshly O/H ed carbs and having to pull the rack off and clean them all up again. But got it sorted out in short order and we are back to riding.
This is the second set of 712's I have put on a bike of mine, so far so good. Not a balance weight on either wheel just lined up the paint dots to the valve stem and they seem spot on. Haven't pushed it in the corners hard yet want them to at least wear the little titties off before I start putting them to the test.

Got just over 200 miles on the odo so far. Rode it about 30 miles down to Ft Wayne to meet up with some others where it was well recieved.

Feeling dependable and solid I rode it the 20 miles to work yesterday. Rather chilly here at 4:30 am but the ride home was a BEAUTIFUL sunny and 80 degrees...

I guess I've made the full transition.  The front fender has to go.  Look at this beast!  It's not going to the opera.....  it's out for a beer!

I couldn't agree more Beekeeper! Actually it's more for function than beauty... as soon as I find or fab up a fork brace that fender is comin back off.

That awesome bike is a buddy of mines GT750... you know, the other Waterbuffalo. Sean and his boy put on the gathering in Ft Wayne for cars and bikes that meet up on Saturday mornings once a month. His recap of building it can be found here. http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=47846.0

Wow. GSXR USD's,6 pot Tokico's,17'' tires,chambers and...is that a 929 swing arm?

Awesome bike for sure. Very nice, but I have to admit,it doesn't pop like the Rock-it does. Can you outrun it?

lol. Just teasing man. A souped up two stroke is a force to be reckoned with! All that doesn't matter, really. I had a nice little trip this weekend and learned to appreciate the idea of going for a ride just to ride. It was quite relaxing actually.

The front fender is good. Think twice aboit ridding with out it.

All sorts of pebbles and debri will fly in onto your frame, engine, headers, gas tank.

Did you think about painting your fender ?  I think red, matching rest of bike, would make it look good. Also black would add stealth character.

Bike looks great overall.

I am still here, just not as often... Off season and work has really cut into the "shop time".

gkmaia:
What do you want to know about polishing? Depending on how bad it is to begin with you start out with stripping the factory coating, be it clear or paint... then lots of sanding as need to remove any blemishes / oxidation. Start with corse and work to finer grit.... down to 600 / 800g wet sanding. Then either a buffer like a bench grinder with buffing wheels or buffs mounted in a die grinder. Black , red, then white compounds...
